Corona Virus Concerns

A big +1👍🏻. Health care professionals lives lost due to no PPE. Money withheld from front line services(historically) to balance books. Short term plans for emergencies rather than forward planning. Pleas from blue light services for investment ignored. Spin replacing honesty-Not running the Country down, just hard hitting honesty. I for one would not like to be setting off on my life journey right now. Nothing is reliable anymore. We as a Country have been taking backward steps for decades.

As an avid follower of the television news, mainly the BBC but sometimes Channel 4 I don't really recognise what you say. As far as I can see there is little that can be described as positive at the moment. As a country we don't even give a total figure for those that have actually recovered from COVID 19 having been in hospital, now that would be a positive but why are the Government reluctant. The press be it TV or printed have to hold the Government to account otherwise we will never know the truth. As for comparisons with other countries it is bound to be that way and has always been that way be it COVID 19 deaths or the number of medals we win at the Olympics there are always comparisons. All the reports I have seen have always cautioned comparisons because of different ways of counting. However whichever way we look at it the death toll in the UK is probably the highest in Europe and we have a right to know why. In years to come all these figures and scientific papers will put us in a better to position to judge. What we should really be concerned about is how prepared our Government was and whether any of their actions have made the situation worse, that is the nub of the matter. If the press continue to ram that home they are doing their job. There has been too much grandstanding about the number of test that will be done. Most of us are more concerned is whether we will be able to get a test if needed rather than knowing that some target plucked out of the air to look good.

The WHO? What's Roger Daltry done to upset you know?
Seriously, I've found that the BBC coverage has been remarkably even handed during this pandemic - asking the hard questions but avoiding the cheap political soundbites that marred the referendum and two subsequent General Elections. If we going to start doubting them I think we really are in troubled times.

I respect the views of others, and of course we are all different with different likes.
But, I love this country. I love it’s history, it’s beautiful landscapes, it’s diverse weather, it’s on the whole nice people. It’s rich cultures, it’s regional differences, it’s fantastic food, it’s great sporting heritage. It’s as good as a lot of places anywhere else in the World, in some instances more interesting, more welcoming.
But I cannot like it’s current politics, (and detest it’s vile press) which is no longer serving the majority of the people for most of the time. We have a very unequal society now, and it’s much too centred on individual wealth. I think those who work hard, put something back into society deserve a good reward for their efforts, but equally those who fall on hard times or need a helping hand also have to be treat decently.I find it difficult to watch others struggling for the basic necessities of life, and question just how easy it has become for others who are doing well, to be able to ignore, turn a blind eye to this inequality.
Its perfectly possible to love ones country and it’s people, but hate it’s political system. Not asking questions about what is going on, how decisions are made, and who ultimately benefits is just wilful ignorance, a blinkered acceptance as far as I am concerned. I just wish there was a legal, non confrontational, rational, trustworthy method of changing things.
I don’t confuse being patriotic with being a realist. I think a lot of folks have learned just how flimsy their underpinning life choices are at the moment, and can only wish them well in terms of getting back on an even keel.🤞🙂

David Klyne asks, "What we should really be concerned about is how prepared our Government was and whether any of their actions have made the situation worse..."
With the usual caveats about media bias, the following is a helpful primer:
https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/responding-to-a-uk-flu-pandemic
This refers to the official published government material of 2011:
https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/responding-to-a-uk-flu-pandemic
Again with a warning about media bias, the following is a more hard hitting report:
For the political nerds amongst us, the independent review of the UK response to the 2009 influenza pandemic by Dame Deirdre Hine is often cited as warning of the risks of a more serious pandemic:
I'll leave you to form your own views.

CL sites, that can only take 5 vans are probably an ideal place for your first few trips out. As there are 2,000+ across the UK, you can choose one that's local to you and you won't be sharing it with many others!
CLs are
- Local to you
- Only have 5 vans on site
- The average cost is £14/night. Very few cost more than £20..
Find a local CL to suit you here on the club site.

If you'd like to get a flavour of what CLs are all about take a look at how CLs celebrated VE Day in style in this You Tube Video
We suggest you put the SOUND ON.
We all look forward to meeting you again to share our homes and farms with you.

Perhaps we will get more clarity when it is discussed in the House tomorrow when MP's will have the opportunity to ask questions. We can live in hope.

Yes, if Boris was hoping for this to be his "Churchill moment" he failed spectacularly - mostly repeating what had already been leaked, though, interestingly, failing to mention garden centres at all.
I think DK is right that it'll probably become clearer when he addresses and is questioned in Parliament tomorrow, and, in my view, he'd have been better leaving his broadcast till after that.
It's certainly not cleared things up - why will unlimited exercise be ok on Wednesday but not tomorrow or Tuesday? How far can I drive to get to a beach? Why will air passengers be required to quarantine but not sea passengers (and it's already been reported that it will not apply to anyone coming in from France)?
I suppose, on the positive side, he did map out a couple of dates for reopening, but of course all these are provisional.
All in all, 15 minutes of my life which could have been more usefully spent!

Whilst I agree with much of what you say I think that unless the greater British public are prepared to put their hand in their pocket nothing will be resolved. They also have to, beyond the initial hysteria of the current crisis, to remember what happened. There needs to be massive social investment from the NHS, Care Sector, Education and Housing. I have lots of ideas where indirect taxes could cover most of that without impacting on the weekly/monthly pay packet or pension. We have just celebrated VE Day, well some of you have. The end of the second world war saw one of the biggest changes in the life of ordinary people. Unfortunately that has not continued and it needs someone of courage to reverse that!!!

People don't want to pay higher taxes, higher council tax, higher anything but they expect the government of the day to do wonders with diminished coffers.
After WW2 the economy had virtually collapsed, everything had gone into the war effort, we were poor and nationalisation took place. We had huge war debts. VE Day must have been a welcome light in such hard times. I suppose people had the will to make changes happen. Will it happen this time? We'll have to wait and see.
But back to Boris and the travel bit, I'm hoping we get a better briefing about this tomorrow. From Wednesday we can travel to garden centres, but how far? Likewise for exercise? I though the French idea of limiting the distance was sensible.
