    Why do you think the AA would advise to have a restraint that fits ANY vehicle if, as you say, the dog will be in the owners vehicle anyway?

    When I broke down towing the caravan, on one occasion, the dog remained in the car for the duration of recovery. On another, it was allowed in the cab, for which we were very grateful. Both occasions were with the AA. One time, the AA supplied us with a hire car when the camper van broke down. Pets weren't allowed in the hire car. But the covered the hire car in blankets and valeted it before returning it.

    I’m a dog owner/lover & former recovery operator contracting to GF,AA,RAC, Police & Highways & others

    the Institute of vehicle Recovery training advises that animals should not be removed from the casualty vehicle on a motorway or duel carriage way & the vehicle be recovered with them inside to a place of safety or destination,

    the companies I worked for left it to the discretion of the driver to then allow them in the cab 

    You have to remember these crewcab slidebeds are upwards of £100k new & drivers can spend all day (& night in some cases) in the cabs, also some drivers just don’t like dogs ( but some can be just plain awkward ;-)

    Some must also be allergic to dogs or just don't want hairs in the cab etc. Nice to hear from someone at the sharp end so to speak.
