Will people be more comfortable with a GCHQ developed app with the "Big Brother" undertones than an Apple/Google one where they just want to sell you stuff? Enter conspiracy theorists, stage left.

Oh dear, does that mean that my family, especially my grandchildren, will have finally got their way and I will have to update my phone! I have a lovely little pink flip top, pay as you ring phone. It doesn't do internet, it's just a phone. After years of teasing me, I might finally have to give in and change it.

exactly right, and the same has been applied in New Zealand, and great play has been made today in the press on how their lock down was brought into play and implemented, I saw a press report some time ago where they had over 100 motor homes parked up at the airport and incoming people had to self isolate in 1 of these motor homes, not sure how they oversaw this operation, but what we must not forgot that New Zealand has a population of only 4.5 million, hardly the size of London, so i dont think the press do themselves any favours when shouting about how good New Zealand have been given the circumstances.

No but testing and 14 days compulsory self isolation wouldn't go amiss here when people arrive from abroad. Instead of, at the moment, just going straight into the community.

The whole concept of a mobile phone (one you carry around with you) has completely eluded my OH. His phone rings, but he ain’t there........🤷‍♀️

Mmmmm   dont like the sound of forced ownership and always having to carry it with you, will go back to 100% cash and a completely dumb mobile phone. thankyou, and stick to my trusty laptop for anything 'tinternet'.  Luddite ?  perhaps I want technology to be my faithfull servant NOT my master. Anyone who doesnt take cash doesnt get paid.   Unless it suits me.

The original Luddites smashed new machinery, i wouldnt smash it, just only use it if it enhances my life....and i can afford it.

The better way would be to test them before they got on the plane, if they showed signs they wouldn't be allowed on. Unfortunately there is a bit of shutting the stable door after the horse has bolted because we should have had isolation in February and March and we probably wouldn't be in the situation we are now.  That's the problem with hindsight!!!

That does not work. No phone app = no sale. They do not accept cash anyway, but you can't pay in goats or camels either.  The idea is that those who won't comply with protecting society must stay in their house and starve.

I wouldn't have any problem with having the App on my phone if it were to help us defeat COVID 19. As far as privacy is concerned somebody, somewhere already knows when I buy something on the internet, buy something in a shop or when I make a phone call. They probably record me travelling down a motorway. They probably see me in a shopping centre on CCTV so to a greater or lesser degree my privacy is pretty bust anyway.

As far as Smart Phones are concerned I expect those that don't have them probably don't realise how useful they are. It's probably a bold claim but I would suggest that since owning one it has really enhanced my ability to do things. I can keep up to date with emails, I can check the news, I can do my internet banking more securely than online. I have a mini atlas in my pocket and I can check when the next bus is or call a taxi. My diary is with me rather than hanging up in the kitchen. I can even use it as a wifi point when I want to use my laptop in the motorhome. They are amazing little things. Margaret was less than convince she should swap her little Nokia for a Smart Phone, you try taking it off her now!!! I do sometimes have pangs of regret in buying her first Smart Phone because as I slumber in the early morning I suddenly get a elbow in my back to make sure I am paying attention to the latest news story glowing out from her phonesmile

Ha Ha,I am staying in because i choose to, and I was ASKED to, and am not starving.

As long as Cash is still legal tender it should be accepted as payment.  No change in that situation in the UK yet.

We have a similar problem here.

    The main options are....

she has no idea where it is and has also forgotten to charge the battery

she has charged the battery but did not then take it with her when she went out

she did take it, but cannot here it ringing from deep in her handbag

The garage where I take my Car for service hasn't taken cash for the last 3 years. During this epidemic I hate paying with cash, much prefer card. Which now goes up to £45 for contactless. No contact with anything, perfect! A couple of our small local shops have jars of Alcohol solution and coins and even the new plastic notes go into there for sanitising.

Our local Tesco still has a limit of £30 on contactless! They can't get a bigger hamster apparently.

Many bus companies are not taking cash on their vehicles.  "Filthy Lucre" indeed.

    +1

Sounds very familiar. I didn't think I had a use for one until I bought one.😀 Now we have one each and the App will go on them as soon as it is made available. Hopefully enough sign up to make it an effective tool against the virus.

+1👍🏻, I swerve cash as much as I can, contactless & big purchases all cashless the sooner it becomes the accepted norm the better.

I've become a real fan of contactless since Covid. No more keying in members on yukky keypads for me. I still wave the card though and haven’t gone the whole hog of using Apple Pay, or whatever, on my phone.

    Cash wears your pockets out😧

I don’t even carry a quid for the supermarket trolley release as I've got a plastic 'cheat' key something like this.
