Will you go

As soon as the lockdown is lifted.I ask because both my husband and I are over seventy and my husband has been notified that he is very vulnerable because of some health issues.I was thinking maybe a fully serviced pitch where we can use our own facilities?

I very much doubt we'll go anywhere this year. I need to be absolutely sure before I venture out and being away whilst constantly on edge and being watchful of others will be no fun at all.

We certainly won’t be going anywhere in the van as soon as the restrictions are lifted. Will wait and see what happens regarding a potential “2nd wave” of infections before planning anything. Just hope we get a good summer to enjoy the garden!

    Stay safe, everyone.

I will have to be sure we are not putting ourselves in danger if we go away. We like to visit places, stop for a coffee, use public transport, but I am not sure that will be a sensible option. We no longer go away to get away from it all, we go to do things. Unless things change drastically for the better in the next few months I am also not convinced we will go away this year.

We certainly won't be first out and will need confidence to venture forth. So not thinking about it just now and I think we've still got a long way to go. 🐝

In February we booked a week in Devon for the end of September, but I’m not entirely convinced that it will be on the cards .

Will we go?  Absolutely not. Our trips, both hotel and caravan have all been shelved for this year.  Why risk it.

I think the answer is 'it all depends'.....

there are many 'ifs' around this...i currently walk every day, cycle twice a week, and go to the supermarket once a week...

i maintain all the distancing (and more) that i should, and i am more aware of others around me and give them plenty of room, too..

however, i dont feel 'unsafe, frightened' by the situation, as horrific as it is....

i dont regard myself as vulnerable, despite being closer to 80 than 50 (theres a sobering thought) and , provided that....etc, etc i would consider using the van as and when the restriction ease..

in fact, id feel much safer wild vanning away from folk than being on a campsite.

we have a 'proposed' meet with pals in late September, south of France and a booking for Spain next January...

id certainly hope to be going on the Spain trip and will take a view on the French one nearer the time .....all dependingsmile

As I stated on another thread we are giving up touring but in February we booked three static caravan holidays, one in September one in July and one in May/June.

Unbelievably the one at the end of May is hanging on to my £75 deposit, stating that the site may reopen on May 14th when the current restrictions end. I am in the unfortunate situation where if I don’t pay the outstanding balance four weeks before the holiday I forfeit the deposit as per agreement.yell

Weare in our 70's and have 3 bookings for camp sites in France in June and July which are similar. We have paid some quite large deposits which are clearly defined by their terms as being non refundable. For 2 of the sites the ballances are due before the trip. We have decided that the whole holiday is probably a write off, and have already had refunds for Red Penant Insurance and only paid a £75 deposit for the Brittany Ferry crossing so that has been cancelled and written off. We expect the French Campsites will be reasonable about credit tranferring to 2020, and cannot hope for any more. We have a first booking in the UK in Septemver and this is a fully serviced pitch, but as DK said above, what is the point of going there if we are so constrained and reluctant to enjoy the locality. personally I think we will write off the whole year and try to ensure we are fit for a return in 2021. We are not about to be silly with our health risks and intend to enjoy the garden and some serious chilling out (and a wee dram now and then).

We are also in the "it all depends" group, and expect it will be a while before we are allowed out and about anyway.

When we are, we will probably head north, using CLs if possible, and only if it is before the end of October.

We are not much into eating out or using public transport, but do enjoy some sightseeing and gentle walking.

You have all given me something to think about. We do like to see some new things sometimes but in the past we have travelled a lot and very widely. This has given us a good idea of the sort of things we like and don't like.We have a few old favourites in the caravanning world which we are missing but I guess they will still be there next year.

Once we get the all clear to travel and sites/CL's are once again open then yes we will be be going away.

Sadly not abroad I fear, we will head North keeping away from crowds, using our own facilities.

We rarely eat out or stop in coffee shops etc, much prefer to take a Picnic and find somewhere nice to park up for awhile.

To be honest anywhere away from all the kids who off school winklaughing

BB, might even think about going away over winter wink

I managed a four day break at Wyatts Covert before all this kicked off. Today I had an outing to my local garage for an MOT and service, returning after a short detour along the motorway to blow the cobwebs out of the engine. I fear that may the extent of this years motorhome travels.

Very possibly, as we use quiet CL's where separation issues shouldn't be a problem, are used to using our own facilities, and although in the over 70s age group do not have any serious health problems (so far). Our main interests are getting out walking in the country, so we should be able to avoid crowded places, and unless meeting up with friends do not frequent cafes, pubs or restaurants. We'll just have to see what will be allowed when.

I am more or less resigned to the fact it will not be wise to go away for the rest of the year. I have already cancelled one trip for a voucher but still have one booked for January 2021 and I even feel that is in jeopardy.

A short simple answer which I totally agree with

Nobody can be sure when this virus will be gone so why have the worry

Isn't it strange how peoples priorities differ.

Everyone on here is very philosophical about all of this and yet over on the CAMC Facebook page people are raving about these discounted night vouchers. How many they've bought, how much they've saved and that they can't wait to get away to use them even to the point of where they are going and when.

    Aren't people funny

When we are eventually allowed to travel we will go down to the static in Cornwall. We won't be "socialising" though! We'd normally use the local shops - butchers/ greengrocers etc but may decide to shop at home and take it with us. We will walk on the dunes and coast path away from other folk. But I'm not expecting that to be before September at the earliest (anything earlier will be a bonus) and, having just recently asked the neighbours to turn the heating off I've warned them that we might well be asking them to turn it on again eventually!

(We had two cottage holidays booked which we've already rearranged for next year and we have a holiday in Greece booked for October which we're pretty much assuming will be cancelled. frown )

We won’t budge until the sites reopen and we can see how the spacing works. We only ever use our facilities and won’t socialise until we’re sure the dangers minimised.  Probably continue supermarket deliveries and caravan round them.  Still looking forward to seeing a different view.

So, your car breaks down. How isolated are you then?

It all depends how desperate you are to go away, if you are willing to gamble with your lives then do it. Asking anyone else to make the decision for you is rather strange to be honest. Please do the thinking for yourself around your own personal circumstances, it makes much better sense. Don’t mean to sound blunt, but this is how I arrive at such an important choice🙂

We will go when the sites open again but of course will be careful. When away we normally do a lot of cycling and walking and are generally happy in our own company sitting in/outside the van reading ect. I’d like to think we will get away in the next 2-3 months but certainly wouldn’t bet on it

As soon as the lockdown is lifted?  I think it will be a gradual process rather than going from lockdown to no lockdown overnight and I doubt that opening campsites will be one of the first priorities.

The other thing is that you say that your husband is classed as vulnerable and therefore I assume that he is in the "shielding" category and having to stay at home for 12 weeks.  Surely, however much you want to go away, do you really think that once the lockdown is lifted, any risk of getting the virus will disappear?

I think you really know the answer to your question but was hoping someone would say: yes, go for it.  It's your own decision and yours alone, not for anybody here to judge.

I don't think Caravanners/Mhers are going to be welcomed with open arms as soon as the lockdown is lifted and as said upthread Campsites will not be a priority.

I'm just taking each day as it comes. If things go well then we might get away much later in the year but I'll have to see how Joe Public is behaving first.

It’s worth bearing in mind that there’s no time limit, regarding vouchers. I’ll be buying some, and use them...sometime.

When we do go away in the van again, it is likely to be to five van sites or a no facilities club site from where we can walk. It will be a long time before using shared facilities in toilet blocks is acceptable for us. Perhaps blocks will remain shut for a while even when sites re-open. We seldom eat or drink out when away or even at home so that won't be an issue for us and a supermarket is a supermarket wherever it is in the country. When will that be ? Who knows ? Perhaps August, maybe later, maybe next year, and even then, I suspect it will be a long time before it is the same as it has been...  frown

Whilst I accept that we are slightly biased in our view, I'm not quite sure why campsites should be a low priority for re-opening. Subject to toilet blocks being closed, it is possible to maintain social distancing in such an environment far more easily than other venues. Whether minimal shopping would help the local economy is debatable plus it is unlikely that the majority of tourist attractions would be near the top of the list.
