Red pennant and corona virus
Just spoke with red pennant and they have stated that their underwriters will not cover anything related to the corona virus. The nice chap on the phone stated they are in negotiation with them to have that turned round so that policy holders can be reassured. We will see

The whole insurance industry needs looking at as they are a law unto themselves. They are all charlatans and crooks and happily take your money but the minute you try and claim their default stance is to look for a reason not to pay out. The government need to sort them out, end of rant.

My rant is about insurance in general and not about coronavirus virus

Isn't it typical of the club over this situation we are in. They seem to have a stance of 'hold back' with information. Members are trying to find factual information because they are worried. Yes, they did post on the Overseas section but there has been no further info since the 15th and now we have a Red Pennant problem that has been brought to our attention by a member. They should be giving us news on that but they haven't.

but we were not to know that and there has been talk within the industry to classify Corona as an "act of God" and therfore not covered, so perhaps it would be best if we just hang fire for a little while rather than trying to be barrack room lawyers , i speak as an interested party as i have RP insurance and do have 2 ferry crossings paid for but not able to take

Anybody looking to take out insurance will be advised that new cover will exclude the current virus Harry. Presently they are not issuing new policies.
Due to the impact Coronavirus (COVID-19) is having in Europe, we’ve taken the decision to temporarily suspend the sale of Red Pennant insurance. This will help ensure we can focus on assisting our members that have existing policies at this difficult time.
If you already have a Red Pennant policy, you can contact us to amend your policy, make a claim or renew your annual policy.
Please be aware there will not be any cover for anything linked to Coronavirus for any new trips you may book, as this is now a known event.
We will start selling Red Pennant again as soon as we can.

why is it that you seem to think yourself as the font of all knowledge, I believe I have told you before my OH has a long track record in the insurance industry so we are both well aware of how insurance companies will wriggle out of paying claims if at all possible,
Corona is having an unprecedented effect globally on the insurance industry and they will i am sure investigate every avenue to try to limit its liability. I know we are all entitled to have an opinion, but do you actually have RP insurance at this time

The thrust of this thread is exactly that which I raised on 12 March and had it IMMEDIATLEY closed by a Mod. However...
Can the Club please clarify what RP will do with EXISTING POLICIES taken out prior to the crisis and state if RP will honour cancellations and pay back costs due to the fact I cannot travel to France due to Government (here and in France) action?

exactly agree 100 pct, however, I do know the club are backed up with distressed people trying to get out of Spain and back to the UK, however, as i said in another post they are able to send out membership renewal notices which i received today.

Because the information will be of use to more than just me!
A post from the Club on here will be disseminated to the many who need to know

I am asking for everyone, not just me!
Also, we all know (or should know) that these posts are seen by the Mods (who are in contact with the Club) and also by Rowena.
If you think that my post is unlikely to be seen then perhaps you should "report" my post so that it automatically comes to the attention of the CM and others at EG.

I made a claim under our Nationwide Travel Insurance after my heart attack on 22nd January this year. The Claims Department response, after the inevitable long hold, taking me through security 3 times and popping me back in the general queue 3 times, was 'We won't do anything until we have contacted your GP and received confirmation that your heart attack was not caused by any undeclared condition or medical episode. Please authorise your GP to provide the necessary medical information ...'
If this approach is being applied to Coronavirus Claims, then the fuzziness around the definitions of what comprises a High Risk category person and the inclusion of so many underlying conditions such as high blood pressure, diabetes, respiratory problems, embolisms etc [almost anything more serious than an ingrowing toenail ...] would seem to offer the Insurance Industry enormous wriggle room to dismiss Coronavirus Claims, irrespective of when the individual policies were issued.
It might need legal action to test the Insurance Industry's response to Coronavirus Claims, possibly via a Class Action to clarify matters, but I will not be a party. I've had quite enough of Travel Insurance companies for just now ['we hope to process your claim at the end of this week, Mr March'. As they said last week, and the week before that ...].

Out of interest, does anyone know whether the underwriters have changed since last year

Good morning everyone,
Since the outbreak of Covid-19 in the UK and across Europe we have been working hard with the Red Pennant Insurance underwriter to have some clear guidance on where our policy holders stand in relation to Covid-19. In what has been a frequently changing situation we have now been able to share responses to the most frequently asked questions which can be found on our website here (scroll to the bottom of the page for the Red Pennant guidance).
The Club’s Emergency Services Team who administer the assistance requests of Red Pennant policy holders, as well as the Club’s Travel Team and Contact Centre have been working hard to look after all our members currently in Europe, who either have the need of the Emergency Assistance team or who are trying to get home, and will continue to do so.

Update - for information to others in a similar situation
I have just received (at my request) a full refund from Red Pennant to my payment card, for the 45 day single trip cover starting May 2nd.
Also, the ferry and campsite booking I made via the Club has also just been refunded in full to my card, with all cancellation and amendment fees were waived (according to the invoice I received)
God willing, I hope to re-book later this year, but that could be me being over optimistic at this moment in time.

yes ditto ...was told i would get a full refund for RP single trip starting 14th April, charge back not yet hit my card but the person i spoke to said it would take time as they were working from home and system was in overload. Booked ferry and 1 campsite direct got a voucher from BF valid for 2 years and from camp site voucher for 18 months from when they re-open so happy with that.

The wording anything related to Corona virus is a loose term that could be a open book has to claims etc better not suffer with anything chest related etc etc it is open to abuse by the insurers, so you are in fact for the foreseeable future going to have to take a chance by travel overseas on the other hand it is early days I am sure once we get a vaccine details will emerge from the insurers as to what they will cover in detail
