Freddy, we stayed at La Domaine de Soleil Plage a couple of years ago on a Carthago rally....the site was first class, loads of facilities, incl river access, but unfortunately the weather wasnt terrific and we left early for some Spanish sunshine...

the cycling is nice, quiet country roads and plenty to see in your car.

    enjoy.

One over looked area close to Calais is the Somme. We love St.Valery sur somme which is a stunning old town with a beach area. The best campsite to use is Le Walric which is decent but not a club standard site.Showers and toilets are clean and useable and we have always found the staff pleasant. You can walk directly into st valery with its lovely old streets, buildings, cafes, shops etc in about 15 to 20 minutes.Bit of a hill on the way back but not too bad.at all. There is a lot of history in that area as well.

Hi Freddy we would think nearer to Tours or Loches as your half way stop over Limoges is a lot further although the A20 is a non paying toll road and you could come off at Junction 54 just before the paying section and continue on the D820 to Souillac on continue from there to Sarlat all well signposted.

Only got 3 weeks over there this year so one plan is to get ferry from Poole to Cherbourg take a week travelling South, have a week in the Pyrenees (will book the site there) then a week returning to Cherbourg via La Brenne nation park.

On the other hand may give France a miss and go to Denmark and the Baltic

We’re unlikely to be in the Calais area, but thanks for the recommendations 👍

Hiya RK. I’ve just checked again and it seems Loches might well be a better half way point. Are you familiar with any sites in the area? I’m quite happy to search one out, but a recommendation is always preferable.

Freddy, try Camping Le Cormier at Obterre, not far from Loches. Run by very nice Brits. Like a big CL but still small.

Thank you, that looks perfect. As an aside, are there places of interest locally? I could probably fit in a 2 night stay, if worthwhile.

WN you beat me to the site at Obterre, we have stayed there many times. They are in the process of putting in a small toilet block and extra pitches plus some hard standings over this winter.

Loches is an interesting town and has all the shopping outlets you need, a small chateau at Azay- le- Ferron futher on there is the Brenne  well known for  different species of birds and about a thousand lakes, the landscape is much flatter than the Dordogne but a good stopover point there is the usual information point on site in the dishwashing area and laundry area at present.

Hope this helps Freddy55 and enjoy your stay. We are ex Somerset people although nearer to Bridgwater than you in the north of the county but now live in the Lot region which is the next department to the Dordogne.

Thanks for that. I took a look at the site, looks nice. Only thing is I thought it a bit pricey, given the time of year. Certainly not prohibitive, but I need to keep a check on spending given that we’re away for a month. Anyway, the countryside is fine with us 🙂

We did look at the site Eurotaveller mentioned again a bit of a surprise re prices and we used to do a short storage at Obterre hence it was suitable for us as we also prefer country to towns but each to their own that is enjoyable with our hobby all sites to suit different tastes.

Enjoy your stay here Freddy wherever you find to stopover.

Hiya BB. Just been looking at their website. I’m considering going for a riverside pitch. There is of course a premium for this. Apart from the premium, is there a good reason to steer clear? Insect life perhaps?

Thanks for that. As it stands, I’ll be booking the Obterre site for two nights, so thanks again for the suggestion 👍

we didnt have a riverside pitch, we were amongst the allocated pitches for our rally...however, they looked nice but couldnt comment on insect life or the like as we didnt spend that much time on that particular river bank...

Hi all. I’m looking at the ACSI thingy. Before I order, I’d like to know if the scheme includes ‘popular’ sites, or are they mostly low-key/out of the way affairs?

Thanks David. I had a look at the Camping Card website, but it doesn’t seem to be working correctly, only lists/shows two sites in the region I was looking at. Anyway, I’m reassured by your comments 👍

We have never used ACSI before as we either travel in July when it cannot be used or when out of season we generally use Aires.  However we are holidaying in September this year so I joined to see if it is worth it so we can have a few days on site somewhere as well as Aires.  try THIS link to view sites.

Thanks. As before, I can only get two sites to load, for any given region.

I was looking at Aquitaine, just to see the kinds of sites that were listed.
