Home Insurance whilst travelling
Having recently retired my wife and I plan to take off in our caravan for 6 months leaving our house unoccupied for the period. Does anyone have any advice on maintaining adequate buildings and contents insurance for that amount of time? Our current one will go up to 60 days (total in any one year) and if we get specialised insurance with the club I have been quoted more than double but for 90 days which starts again if we return and then go away again. I have always thought we have been well served by the club's insurance providers and it may well be worth paying so much extra for the added risk. I would just like to hear how others have dealt with it as I know there are many members who go away for extended periods

No doubt others with better experience will be able to advise. I remember choosing SAGA rather than our bank (who were offering a good deal) as the SAGA one covered us for more days away, but can't remember what the time limits were. Maybe it would be a good idea, if you can, to get someone to stay in your house for a weekend say, which may satisfy the insurance company that it wasn't left empty for the full 6 months.

Many thanks Deleted User. The C&CC has come up trumps.

Do check the conditions of the policy for when you are away long periods. Most will have a requirement for someone to check the premises on a specified basis, this can vary between companies as can the minimum period away for this to kick in, so be sure what they are.
You might also find a condition that the heating be set at a minimum temperature to prevent frost damage.

In order to meet our insurers terms - a neighbour has keys to the house and makes a weekly inspection. He then calls my mobile telephone from the house to advise all is ok. Whilst we never have had to make a claim - the fact that the landline telephone record shows that a call has been made, is indicative that the house is being checked on a regular basis.
Hope to have helped.

My point was that it is necessary to check the policy as many members will have policies that have specific requirements. If they find them then they have a choice, either comply or find a policy that better suits their needs, but hopefully the point will prevent someone who had not appreciated this. What course they take is up to them but they need to know the potential problem.
