Calais.
A pal of mine recently parked up in a hypermarket area after Xmas to do some shopping before returning to Britain.Upon exiting the shop he was approached by a security guard,who suggested he looked under his motor home .In doing so he found a construction of a rope hamoc slung between the rear springs .The culprit had been arrested as some one saw him setting this up !! SO,,,BE AWARE !! BE CAREFUL in France !!

Anyone who leaves a van parked up in a hypermarket anywhere in France let alone Calais is asking for trouble. An acquaintance of ours tried it, when he came out all the family including granny had was the shopping and the clothes they stood up in . Police shrugged and van was never seen again. You are being watched

Indeed, this really is scaremongering by Tigi! ANY Hypermarket? ANYWHERE? All I can say is that in 30+ years of parking in French Hypermarkets I have NEVER experienced any problems. IF we are to be given scare stories please back up your assertions with some valid crime statistics.

I might be scared if I understood the post but do find it a bit of a stretch, even on here, to label all hypermarkets anywhere in France as being a risk.
If they are a risk I suspect its no more so than here.

To provide some solid criminological data on this matter and to reassure members that Feance is safe....
1. Crime statistics show that GB has a 15% higher incidence of private vehicle theft than France.
2. Car thefts have declined each year in France for the last 10 years by between 3 and5% per year.
3. The French Government publishes crime density maps on a regular basis. Most rural areas frequented by caravanners have a low or very low incidence of crime.The crime hotspots are overwhelomingly concentrated in cities, in particular Paris,Marseille, Lyon, and Lille .
I can supply the detailed references to these data if anyone wants.
Conclusion..plese dont be swayed by anecdotal scaremongering!

If you read the post I said you are asking for trouble by leaving an unattended van in a hypermarket car park (I`ll remove France specifically) on the continent and I stick by it!
I`m afraid quoting crime statistics won`t stop a broken window ruining your trip.

Tigi, What you actually said in your first post was that thieves stole a caravan from a hypermarket - presumably by using an angle grinder to cut away a hitchlock without anyone noticing what they were doing. I shall continue to shop at hypermarkets but will certainly watch out and listen out in future for men with angle grinders.

A bit off thread but....................when I moved to Cornwall in 1974 I visited my local pub, in Pelynt, and was told that if I kept laughing there would be trouble.
The source of my amusement was a biker guy with a leather waistcoat with the words HELLS ANGLES on the back.
Nearly as funny as the OP............and yes, I am joking.
