Best Route to Norway

Hi

We are exploring an idea to visit a friend of mine in Norway the Rukjan in Telemark to be precise, l worked with this friend for nearly 20 years but not seen him since 2006. We last visited him and is family in 2003 but flew to Oslo then train to Kongsberg where he picked us up to travel to his home in the Rukjan, for those that may not know the Rukjan was where the heavy water was produced in the second world war, a lot of the Norwegians lost their lives stopping the Germans removing the water to Germany.

We have never toured abroad in our Motorhome and would be novices, not sure the best route to take, l know they stopped the ferry from Newcastle to Stavanger quite a while ago. so l suppose it would have to be ferry to Holland, not sure of the best route from their, also how long it would take. l am hoping to find sites in the clubs overseas touring brochure enroute. Once we arrive we will be touring Norway with my friend Asbjorn who has motorhome of is own. Any ideas and advice would be greatly appreciated.

Sounds like a great trip.  Once you get to Denmark you have a couple of choices, across the Øresund Bridge to Sweden then drive to Norway, or take the ferry from Hirtals to Norway

You're looking at over a thousand miles each way, even before you start your Norway tour. Presumably it is going to be a fairly longish trip. No doubt our tame Norwegian will be along shortly with detailed advice if he can drag himself away from kitchen units.

It is a long way but much less than travelling to the south coast of Spain via France.

Where youl live in the UK and the size of your motorhome might determine which is the best crossing for you. I don't think there is a lot to be gained by using a crossing from Hull if you live in the south. It is an easy quick drive into the Netherlands from Calais and there are no penalties for motorhome size on the Tunnel. I drove from Calais to Arnhem in an easy day. From Chieshire, perhaps it might be worth going to Hull, only you can decide. After visiting Arnhem I went via Hamburg to Plon in northern Germany then on into Denmark

The tolls for the bridges to Coenhagen and then across to Sweden are not cheap so your next decision will be how to get to Sweden, ferry or bridges. I paid the tolls. It might pay you to check out ferries Denmark (Frederikhavn) to Gothenberg. Copenhagen is worth a visit and the Oresunds Bridge is spectacular but thereafter there is not a lot to see on route to Oslo..

My notes on the trip I made can be found >here<  but it was a long time ago. I am sure more recent travellers can offer more thoughts.

If you put "Norway" in the search box at the top of the Overseas Sites and Touring thread you'll see discussions and answers to similar previous questions.
