Over night England the Mighty are also 39 for 2

Now will we reach the dizzy heights  of avoiding the follow on tonight I ask myself undecided. New Zealands  375 a o   would have to be passed  by at least  150 to hold any hope of a win I think.

The thought of batting fourth  with this squad induces tremors the NHS won't be able to treat alas !

And 2019 ends pretty much as it began with England in total disarray.

Over the last 12 months we have seen the same old same old from them. This time the bowlers were struck down with South Africas version of  The Mahdis Revenge. So Captain R decides to field !! then when the bowlers have exceeded all reasonable hopes and got S A out along come the Great Northern Heros and collapse like an unsupported tower of playing cards. Then dammit they repeat the performance in the second innings.

What, please, are the odds on the Second Test starting with pretty much the same England Batsmen +/- one but with at least three different bowlers undecided.

Now I'm off to wear out my aged knees praying for torrential rain & floods to strike South Africa and Australia to put out those ghastly bush fires AND make crikkit impossible in All Africa for a few years !

Brian , I sense a touch of " we're doomed " regarding the rest of the tests in SA .😀.

As it's the time of peace and goodwill , I'll give them the benefit of the doubt over the first test.  If it becomes 3 down , may the lord have mercy on their souls as they will be in for the mother of all sledging.😀😀.

If England had even the tiniest traces of Good Will they'd be offering cheap tickets to the  Carnival of the Boxes where all things Cricket should be burned & the cinders consigned to the deep from the stern of the Galley as they row home laughing

I notice today that a certain 'National Crikkit Authority ' is now, openly supporting the reduction of Test Matches from five days to four days. I suppose that would allow them to work into the schedules another two or three games to fleece the paying customers .  yellyellyell

Have England learned nothing from the Johnny Beirstow incident of 2018 .Now our opening bat will be missing for the remaining tests .  Don't  play football , practice your own game ...the majority of you need too .😭.

No need for you to apologise,Trellis.  Seeing, yet again, so-called International standard Top Five batsmen  cringing and cowering and letting the ball hit hem on the helmet like that I'm only astounded at my foresight in the original post with which I opened this thread 12 months ago.

At the moment the bowlers should be the ones with pride in their performance, especially since they are expected to bowl for up to an hour before taking a break.  These are the ones who Root said will be seriously considered for dropping ! Anderson just back from a serious calf injury, Archer bowling with a sore elbow since the summer, Broad who might need a spur to bowl at his very best but never drops below an acceptable standard  And most of them have had the Mahdi's Revenge as well so reducing their practice / warm up time.

I shall not comment on the batsmen --  Sunday is approaching so it would be most inappropriate !

Not doing too bad at the moment Brian. 91 for 1

Fwit I was disappointed with Root for pinning the blame for the last defeat on his bowlers, the batsmen hardly covered themselves in glory, and I'm a fan of his..

i hope I haven't put the mockers on them now.

Effectively, 155 - 2 at the moment. If England can post a reasonable total, chasing the runs might prove difficult for SA. At least we’re in the game smile

    I predict a win, for England 🤞

10 minutes to close of play and Root edges a 'scrambler', Dom Bess in as knight watch man ( He's the one who  polishes the time pieces smile ) and he's gloved one down the leg side for a "pair" and thats the last ball of the day !!

Still a steady 61 was good support for Sibley who's doing what openers should be doing !!

Must have woken up in a parallel universe , surely can't be the same batsmen used in first innings. Not complaining though.😀😀.

Have to admit that I tend to think & comment badly on their poor efforts, so now Brian must say WELL DONE ENGLAND & WALES ,  just keep that standard up & we'll be as happy as Larry or a whole warren  of bunnies  smile< ----------------- >smile
