For any of you who haven't yet visited the North East I can recommend Northumberland. If you love uncrowded places (especially beaches) you won't be disappointed: even in July and August!! In The Cheviots you often won't see another soul all day, especially if you stay clear of the actual "Cheviot" summit itself. My personal favourite villages are Alnmouth, Powburn, Embleton, Bamburgh and Warkworth. I know I'm biased but we do have amazing beaches and countryside. Just look at the maps and see how much open space there is up here😊

Ps for those in need of culture and shopping there is Newcastle 😉

September is possibly a bit early for the Northern Lights.  Worth taking the cable car for the view over the town, and the University Botanic Garden is interesting, as is the museum by the water in town.  The church too.

Thanks for that bit of information - we'll certainly be down there then. Is it just the one stage of the tour?

It’s the First day of the 2020 Tour. As the race gets closer, you can download the route in minute detail, and it gives approximate timings depending on how fast they are travelling, so it is possible to take in various locations. Ideally, you want to site yourself on or at the top of a big hill, so this Stage is going to give some great viewing spots! The start of the race is well worth being around, all the teams and riders are introduced, and you can have a good old poke around the team buses, which are very interesting in their own right. Penzance will be heaving, as will the finish. Car parking is usually chaotic😱 They have perfected rolling road closures now, rather than total shutdowns, but expect the odd bit of mayhem! 😁

Will we be able to book a  " pitch " on the roadside like as what they seem to do over there and all with out punishment or penalty,  TTDA??

Dammit Brian's always keen to find a pitch where the scenery comes to him instead of him going to it, Old Tightwad that he ( I ) can be wink

Have to ask those in the know { Tinwheeler etc }   :==>  Will the maps shew the sites of Quality  Tiddy Oggy Retailers, please   ??

Some of those roads are possibly as tight as they come AB, especially the route from Penzance around and up towards St Ives😱 But lots of campsites.

Enterprising local farmers usually get as organised as they do here in Yorkshire, and there may well be “extra parking”. We used to stop around Fowey, and if big cruise ships were due, in the early days it wasn’t uncommon to find a field open to park in for 50p for “cruise ship viewing”😁

It’ll be painful for non cycle loving locals for a day (sorry Tinny😁) but it should be a brilliant stage and I can see sites etc... having a bit of a visitor boost. September is usually (offers a prayer to the Weather God) very nice as well.

Rest assured, Brian, that if you’re way down west you’ll not be far from a Philps and their Hayle car park will take your van👍🏻

But, Tinners, me ole mate, I was hoping they might have stalls out on the roadside, regularly re-stocked by lads on pedal trikes with those whicker butcher's basket thingummies 'cos if I move I might lose my preferred corner of a foreign field surprisedwink and that would never do !!yell

    P.S. / Edit

Seem to recall there is a small mini-market not a thousand yards away with much better access  !!

They might have stalls, trikes and whicker baskets, Brian. Nothing would surprise me.

Ah, that tiny but newish mini-market across the quay? Yes, a good car park but don’t rollback😀

We have had a couple of lovely Christmas greetings from two CLs we like a lot, one we usually visit at least two times a year, if not more. Haven’t been to the other for a while, but think it might be a nice early 2020 return! Not too far away, lots to see close by, good cycling and dog walking..........thank you Skybarn!👍

I had that E Mail as well, TDA and it prompted me to consider a revisit to Skybarn. Haven't been that way since we swapped to a MH. I had planned a visit to Whitby this year but things got in the way. Skybarn could make a useful halfway house.

I can give you a couple of very nice sites not far from Whitby as well CY, depending upon what facilities you need, certainly top Sites for seeing Moors. Ask away if it helps👍

Thanks, TDA. Accessibility is probably the top 'want'. The MH is pretty self-supporting for several days.

CY what do you mean by accessibility......within walking distance, close to bus stop, on a cycle route? or something else? I too can give you a few suggestions depending on your requirements.

We find staying out on Moors, and using our MH easier and nicer.

Whitby itself now has a huge park and ride, and a very big town car park down by River Esk, so quite easy to park up and get into town.

Pickering has some decent car parks if you know where to look, one opposite Lidl is our choice with MH. Pickering has a hidden away overnight MH stopover, think it is £12 for night, right in town centre. I will find details for you. https://www.campercontact.com/en/united-kingdom/yorkshire-and-the-humber/pickering/22736/pickering-antique-centre

You can of course hop onto train and go all way into Whitby from here for day.

Helmsley has dedicated MH overnight parking in the big main car park, not sure but it might actually be free.  https://www.campercontact.com/en/united-kingdom/yorkshire-and-the-humber/helmsley/62368/cleveland-way-carpark

Again, it’s two minutes stroll into town square and right next to Castle and Walled Gardens. I think Nellie has used a nice CL just outside Helmsley, might be Carlton Grange?

The Crown Pub in Hutton le Hole has some hook ups for MHs, nice food, right next to Ryedale Folk Museum and Craft Centre. https://www.crownhuttonlehole.com/events

There’s also a CL in HleH but it’s expensive.

Sites.........Fox and Rabbit CL, Ashfield Caravan Site CL, Cliff Farm (ex CL), there’s a very nice private site at Beadlam Grange which has a lovely farm shop, cafe, etc........

Naughty bit now........ there are lots of hidden away little spots where you could easily overnight up on Moors, in woodland. One of best is just off road between Helmsley and Bilsdale. It’s a Forest car park at Newdale Bank, flat hardstandings. We often picnic there, but haven’t overnighted, but we have seen the odd camper that has obviously pulled in for night. There are spots like this all over Moors. Ok for small outfits.

The club site nr Whitby is on the moors edge and is more like a big CL. There are a few good CLs in the area too, Monks Farm, Swan Farm and Abbey View & Toft House Fm which are nearly side by side.

We do like Carlton Grange, but it is way out in the wilds.
