Word coming in that there is a "NO OVERNIGHT" parking ban being enforced in the Motorhome parking area !!

May be wise to seek out alternative night halts in safe locations !!

Some motorhomers are reduced to using the  Aire set up by the Calais  city council last year in Rue d'Asfeld, though paying the fee of €10 a night must be distressing for them .

as i said, we dont go that way and wouldnt use it but also wpuldnt dream of paying €10 to park the van when there are many free alternatives along the same route.

we require nothing of a site when 'bolting for the blue' so dont use them, though thats not to say we dont have 'destination stops for real R&R.

however, there are thousands of free, safe, aires all over France, its as easy to stop at a free one as it is to use a €10 one.

for those who use aires, 100 nights at €10 a night adds a lot to long trip...using free aires gives an awful lot more wine, cheese and fish moneywink

Thanks Deleted User that’s useful to know. We were never tempted to use the parking at Cite Europe for an overnight stop - too many itinerants walking about even during the daytime. We’ve often used the Aire at Rue de Asfeld and found it good value at 10 Euros.

December 2019 reports about no overnight parking at Cite d'Europe are plain to read on the CamperContact page about that place - they paint a picture of the lengths motorhomers are going to to find other alternatives in the area where they can stay overnight without paying €10 in the town -  they mention parking in the road outside and at Lidl, as well as at the new free Aire at Sangatte already mentioned here - although one report dated just eight days ago says that Aire has been "taken over by gypsies" . Perhaps they are just market traders and will move on after the Christmas markets.

For many years, as far back as the Sangatte camp era, we've parked well away from Calais.

Usually at Le Portel (about €4.50 this year) and more recently at the free Montreuil Aire.

Le Portel has a very good beach to run the dog after our long journey to France, a Boulangerie close by in the morning, fresh air in abundance overlooking the Channel and around twenty minutes to Eurotunnel.

Montreuil has shops, boulangeries and restaurants a minute walk away, very quiet and toilet facilities on site for those who require them - but a longer run to Calais of 45 minutes.

The Wissant Aire gets full very early, especially in Summer, but there are a few small stopovers by the side of the D940 if you can seek them out – none with facilities.

    FWIW ....& I digress but ...

Can someone explain the logic in 2019 behind this almost obsessive quest of some, often affluent, M/H owners to congregate & illicit / free park at these fringe / iffy / dirt ground locations ?

Can grasp the concept of the free or token cost Aire etc for ease when travelling and even an odd night chilling f.o.c. on a scenic beach front if allowed un-disturbed etc

As a caravanner you will not grasp the concept, we never did until we moved to a MH.

It is not cost per se but being where you want to be not out of town on a large campsite.  Get a MH and try it you never know you may enjoy it!!

Can't comment on those sites AD as never been but we do prefer Aires over sites when over there but they need to be "nice ones" smile

Having switched to a MH in March and taken it to France in September, we are also very much sold on Aires. The photo is our first night on an Aire near Poitiers. So far all those we have stayed on have been chargeable. Some we liked better than others, but we would revisit all of them. It's not a question of cost, one in a car park at Aigues Mortes cost more than some of the ACSI sites we used. It's the fact they were within walking distance of where we wanted to be.
