Taking a motorhome to Malta

Hello everyone.  We're thinking of taking the motorhome to Malta.  We've regularly caravanned and Motorhomed in Europe so we're fairly happy with the driving and camping side of things.

Does anyone have experience of, or advice about ferries from Italy to Malta, or Italy to Sicily then onward to Malta?  About Insurance cover, breakdown cover?  Or anything else that might be unique to such a trip?

Thanks in advance for any help.

Perhaps you know Malta already, but if not it might be a good idea to take a cheap flight out there to check things out - Saturday flights from Exeter early in the new year are available at £25 return which is unbelievably cheap.

I think i would be wary of taking any vehicle to Malta, unless the Maltese  roads and drivers have improved since we were there in the 1990ssurprised

The Valletta Pozzallo ferry route connects Malta with Sicily. Currently there is just the 1 ferry company operating this ferry service, Virtu Ferries. The crossing operates up to 12 times each week with sailing durations from around 1 hour 45 minutes.

Unlikely to be any serious issues once we get there as we have Maltese relatives and have visited several times by air!

Thanks Oneputt.  Have you used that service?  If so any comment/advice?

Having been to Malta many times I think it would be the last place I would take a MH to. I only know of one campsite on Malta (there may be more)  parking anywhere on the island is difficult to say the least.

I love Malta but taking a flight there is the best way IMO or as suggested leave the MH in Sicily and take the ferry as a foot passenger.

Tend to agree, manic on many of the roads, narrrow routes everywhere, parking is a nightmare in tourist spots and few decent campsites. Quite a few of the wild camping spots are colonised by traveller groups. Gozo maybe easier in a MH - much quieter and less developed, but care needed with any journey off the main routes. Personally I wouldn’t take a MH there, or hire a car. The bus network is extensive and cheap, but can be very crowded.

OK folks, thanks for the contributions both positive and negative.  There's enough helpful stuff there for me to carry on planning.
