Has anyone had a UK to Spain ferry cancelled due to bad weather? Would be interested to know how Brittany Ferries got in contact and handled this and what options and or compensation they offered. Thanks

Was the ferry cancelled due to adverse weather or were you delayed in getting to the port due to the weather conditions?  If the former were you informed by BF and if so how soon before the sailing. If the latter how soon before the sailing did you inform BF? Did you book through the club or direct? All of the above have different answers.

B/F normally notify passengers who have booked with them - by phone, text message or e mail in the event of cancellations, but sometimes they fail to reach you. There is a legal right to compensation if the ship breaks down but there is NO automatic right to compensation if the cancellation or delay is  due to bad weather. I have tried and failed with that one !

In the event of bad weather there are normally alternative routes, ports and times available for crossings to France and customer services will help to re route you for those - although you may not find them convenient.

For sailings to Spain there are fewer choices and it may be some time if you choose to wait for the next available sailing. For those who choose to cross to  France and drive to Spain instead of waitng B/F will adjust the ferry fare and make a contribution for fuel for the drive - on their own  scale of mileage payment which they have in place.

Good travel insurance will be needed for extra hotel costs and other additional expenses. You need bills and receipts and cannot simply claim for inconvenience.

Please don't take this as an authoritative answer - please write to B/F customer services for that, or to the Club if you booked with them.

Sorry I wasn't clear. We are sailing on Cap Finistrere to Bilbao mid January 2020, me, wife and dog in a pet friendly cabin.  If there is a problem we are likely to end up on the tunnel with the dog. Having driven through France previously we are aware of the cost of tolls, sites etc and just wanted to know a few details of what happens should the sailing be cancelled.
