We're approaching that time of year when we start to groan about what to get for teenagers for Christmas when all they really want is the dosh.

We've paid for driving lessons for the older grandchildren as birthday and/or Christmas gifts but we have one who is just 16 years of age and never stops going on about which car he'd like, etc., etc., and he's had a go on private property in his dad's car already and loved it.

We're thinking of getting him a Young Driver Voucher to enjoy the experience and, hopefully, give him some useful skills before he hits the road next year.

Has anybody bought into this idea and, if so, I'd value your feedback.

Thank you.

Yes -- Did this 2 years ago for Grandaughter's Christmas present.

I will give it 10 out of 10 for professionalism, organisation and training.

Second lesson, without any previous driving experience, she was zig zagging through cones - in reverse

Having just achieved her 17th birthday she will start full driving lessons next week.

Yes I have also done it, it gives them a good start. The boys seem to appreciate it more than the girls who were less of a hurry to get behind a steering wheel. All my eldest grandchildren are now qualified drivers,

Thanks to all for your feedback.  I've talked to his dad and we agree that it's the best Christmas present for him this year.

This discussion reminded me that this was what we intended doing for our grandchildren.  However, be warned that the voucher code given by the CMCC did not work on the website and I had to phone Young Driver who were very helpful and applied the code for me.

A tractor was the first thing I drove too.

Re knowing how things work .... it amuses/bemuses me when I see people rolling backwards & forwards on a hill slipping the clutch .... obviously clueless to the mechanics. At least I'm not paying.

    Hi Chris.

Fortunately, I've just gone through the online booking process and the CAM code did work, thus reducing the total amount by 20%.

Great idea and I know he'll be chuffed.

Maybe I wasn't typical of girls when I was younger but my dad taught me to drive when I was 13 years of age, using private property and Pilling Sands, and I couldn't wait to get my licence.  I passed my test six weeks after my 17th birthday. smile

Fairly local to me in the early 1960s and with easy access onto the sands and good long distances to practice changing gear. wink
