Edinburgh Caravan & Motorhome Club site
Hi all, we are visiting Edinburgh club site for a few nights over New Year in our motorhome and wondered if anyone has any info regarding using public transport to get to and from the city, buses, taxis etc. Any information would be appreciated, thanks

Yo there Nellie I'd check with the Wardens if you can catch them at an "Off Peke " ( pun intended ) time -- they probably have more up to date info on the changes that will occur over the Festive Season.

As I remember there is a bus stop a 5/10 minutes (half a mile) walk from the site with buses into the centre. At the time we were there (Easter) there was actually a mini bus service from the site itself but don't know if that is still operating.
There is also a free park and ride (the parking is free) with trams into the centre about 8 miles from the site and the trams are fun! I seem to recall seeing a few MH there but check with them direct
And as above the wardens will have plenty of information. It's a great site, with a lovely beach front within easy walking distance. And a Toby nearby too, walking is possible (uphill) but it has a large car park.

We were there in early October, mini bus was still available, there was a number to ring to order it posted near reception.
Good bus service from the stop near the roundabout, but it is a bit to walk and dark with apparently no lights on the path. As caravanners, we were able to drive along and park all day near the bus stop, so this was not a problem.
Plenty of info available at reception.

There are buses on Muirhouse Parkway which is about a ten minute walk depending on your level of fitness, we probably take a bit longer! Not sure I would want to do the walk in the dark! There are a couple of bus routes which are quite frequent. The number 27 is the most direct route into the City, you can get off near where it crosses Princes Street. There is another bus that also goes to the City Centre but travels via Leith. I understand all Edinburgh buses now accept contactless cards which is useful, unless of course you have a Scottish bus pass. There is a fixed price taxi service from the site, £6 per person when we were there in September. They have a fixed drop off point but I believe you can also arrange alternative drop off places but this might cost more. The people that run it are very pleasant. You would need to check that it was still running at that time of year although I would imagine the site is busy over New Year so it probably is.

We are also at Edinburgh for New Year. Having been before we have used the bus stop on the Silverknowes/Muirhouse Parkway, which was a short walk from the site. It was a bit wet and muddy last time, but easily walked. We have also walked round from the pub at Silverknowes roundabout which although is not particularly well lit, is a proper pathway.
We went into Edinburgh central a couple of days whilst we were there and thoroughly enjoyed the bus ride seeing lots of places from the top deck. I'm sure you will enjoy it immensely.
We've booked for a meal at the Toby Inn (Lauriston Farm) for New Years Day, the food there is very nice, although quite busy at times.
We also recommend the Torchlight Procession (I think on the 30th) which is a great spectacle, well worth the wait to see.

It's probably my favorite site, love it. As since the buses stopped running right past the gate a few years ago, it a 10 - 15 minute walk, if it's daylight remember there is a footpath which cuts a few minutes off when compared to following the road. I'd carry a torch for use after dark as the lighting is poor, as mentioned in the above posts.

We will also be there over new year albeit with caravan. We have a dog so normally drive into the City and park on the street behind Waverley Station. Depending on the day taxis will be busy on NY eve and day and remember the 2nd Jan is also a holiday in Scotland. Are you going to the Hogmanay party? We are (you need to buy tickets) and will be using public transport on that occasion.

There is a very regular service to Princes Street but you do have a 10 minute walk to the bus stop along a road unlit at night.
If you are technical Lothian Buses have an App which will answer all your questions and provide timetables and travel alerts.
