Recommended Campsites?
Dear All,
We will be driving with our small caravan from Bilbao to Capo de Gata nr Almeria in mid-January, returning at the end of March, We would like recommendations for campsites open at this time:
1. Near Bilbao for return stop, within striking distance of the ferry port.
2. Near Madrid with easy access to city centre.
Thanks in advance.

Mike, For Bilbao contact the manager at the Kobetamendi Youth hostel/ Motorhome Aire to ask if you can stop there with your caravan - I believe the answer will be yes, but best to check.
I don't know Madrid but UKCampsite.co.uk has reviews of Camping Arco Iris which is on a bus route and the nearest campsite to the city. I believe it's in your ACSI book too.
Happy to help a fellow Eriba owner !

We have stayed at Aranjuez (Camping Internacional Aranjuez - ACSI 3008). The site is open all the year. From Aranjuez there is regular and cheap train service which takes you right into the centre of Madrid (to Sol) and there is plenty of free parking at Aranjuez station. Can't help with Bilbao.

Stayed at Kobetamendi earlier this year, great aire/site with spectacular views over Bilbao and easy bus journey into city centre. It’s very orientated towards motorhomes, but there was a single caravan there during our stay, so definitely a possibility. Very busy site with chaotic reception.

Hi
We stayed at Aranjuez as well. Decent site.
Hope you enjoy Cabo de Gata. We stayed at the main campsite there in February one year and enjoyed it. We went for the birdwatching but the walking was good and the area a bit different from normal. Almeria was a pleasant place to visit. A few years ago mind.

Reference your return journey.....
If you are on the morning ferry from Bilbao, there are very very few sites which will allow you to get to the port in time - especially if you are travelling with an animal.
However as mentioned many times - one can overnight on the carpark at Bilbao port with check in the night before between 16.00 and 19.00 hrs. Obviously no hook up but there are toilets open and plenty of security keeping a watchful eye on the area, although it did not stop some very affable Albanians requesting a lift to London.
Certainly would stay on the car park again if we were on the early ferry.
Hope I have helped - happy holidays

Many thanks for all these replies. Our return ferry is the afternoon one, so probably looking at a campsite within about 1 hrs drive, but with good public transport to get into Bilbao to do some exploring! So any recommended sites that meet that criteria would be warmly welcomed.

concur with this, very nice park adjacent to site but beware it is no dogs, we missed the sign but they must have security cameras watching your every move as we were soon accosted by a security guard, no drama just asked politely to leave.
