Xmas en route to the Algarve
Hi.
We are taking Euro tunnel on the 23/12/19 @ 10.30am travelling to the Algarve can anyone recommend a Xmas eve overnight stop over with a easy walk in to a town with restaurants and bars or a rally with other campers.
Any advise on a route/stopovers ect would be welcome or any one travelling the same route.
We are a couple with two dogs in a motorhome pulling a smart car.

I don't know what route you plan but perhaps an overnight at the campsite at Nantes which has separate hardstandings for motorhomes and an on site restaurant - if that restaurant is closed there are trams from the gate to the city centre. Somewhere in the town should be open on Christmas Eve though Christmas Day might be a different problem.
May I say that I do hope your Smart car is on a trailer rather than towed with an A-frame as the traffic police in Spain are not at all keen on A-frames, but I guess you already know that.

We have contacted camping Larouletta who is open for Xmas.
We do have the smart car on a trailer.
Anymore suggestions on routes and overnight stays would be welcomed.
We have allowed 5 days travelling four nights is this enough?

Milea, Leaving the tunnel at midday French time how far do you hope to get on that first day? I will try to think of possibilities around that distance.

We will try to get on a earlier crossing and looking to share the driving around 6 hours per day 250/300 miles.
After reading several stories regarding bad weather through France in December we are unsure weather to take the direct route through France or follow the coast.
Any advise or experiences welcome.

Millea, I can only say what you have realised for yourself already - that you are not going to get to Urrugne in a day and a half at that time of year. Are you in such a rush that you want to try?
But there are all sorts of other possibilities. You can drive down to the big Aire at Honfleur on the 23rd and spend Christmas Eve around the port there - bars, cafes and restaurants are plentiful. You could even stay on the Calais Aire for two nights when you arrive on the23rd and have a brisk walk on the beach or the cliffs on Christmas Eve, or unship your Smart car and spend an hour or two in the old town at Boulogne which will be decorated and festive.
If you decide to head south on Christmas Day then listen to the weather forecasts and choose your route accordingly - the A75 south from Clermont Ferrand will be lovely if it is sunny but not a good idea if snow is forecast.

while i agree with Et in that you should really be rushing, it is perfectly possible to get from (say) Cherbourg to Urrugne in a day and a half.
we usually do Nantes in half a day 2pm-6pm, stay on the aire at Les Sorriniére (a bit small for towing vehicles) and then up early 8 ish) and head for the Aire (car park) at Irun....about 7 hours.
then, usually on our winter trip, its over the Pyranees at Pamplona, Zaragosa and to Valencia...
have a good trip but dont underestimate the travelling time, especially when towing.

What about spending a couple of days on a campsite in the Charente, with British owners. I think it you were to spend Christmas Eve with them it would be more interesting than being somewhere on your own, and finding a restaurant which was open?
Have a look at Le Paradis at Mazieres, in the Charents - google tells me it's about a seven hour journey from Eurotunnel. It gets good reviews on UKCS Le Paradis, Mazieres, reviews.0 -
Camping Montreal (ACSI), just south of Limoges, is open all year and popular with Brits. There is a restaurant on site but it is not near any towns.

The restaurant on Camping Montreal is closed due to fire just before we stayed there at end of October and as said it is a popular site and we will be staying there again next month on our way home an easy site to find just off J42 on the A20.
