First adventure

We're just ending our first big motorhome adventure having spent 3 months in south of England, France and mostly in Tuscany. Absolutely loving the lifestyle but wonder if there is any advice how to cope with the volume of flying bugs in warmer climates.  We found some great spots to stay in country, on farms and by water but it seemed that mainland Europeans found it much easier to spend time outside in the evenings whereas we struggled with these pests.

Any suggestions or advice or is it just a case of getting used to them?

An insect repellent containing 50% Deet - such as Jungle Formula, but other brands are available.

We've used mosi-guard, a natural non Deet product when we've been to tropical mosquito prone areas. Spray or roll on, both have proved very effective. Here's a link.

Repellent or retreat is all you can really do. I do admire continentals who don`t seem to be troubled. Camping Le Clos de Rhone in the Carmargue has the largest electric insect killer I`ve ever seen, an upright electric cage around 12` high and 5` across placed on top of a sanitary block accompanied by the sound of insects being zapped.

I've never found anything that is truly reliable to keep insects at bay, some recommend Smidge which has a citronella base (also used in candles etc.) I think some locals do develop an immunity but others react badly so need a good supply of antihistamine medication/ cream plus antiseptics too. The best thing is to cover up or go indoors at peak times. Staying by rivers, lakes and woodlands can make things worse too but I've experienced mosquitoes by the sea in southern France so check out areas in advance.

    HI

We live in Spain and most locals including us use something called Halley's repelente and after the recent floods in September there was  a deluge of mosquitos/flies and this as worked really well haven't been bit this year yet but touch wood,  it doesn't smell that good but it does what it says.
