Free WiFi is a bit of a misnomer, the cost is recovered somewhere, just hidden from view. I don't want to pay for someone else to take all the bandwidth whilst streaming. If I want club Wi-Fi I'll pay for it if not I will tether my phone to my iPad

I completely agree, One.👍🏻
Cabbie, I really don’t think the standard of Wi-fi offered by CAMC will attract anyone. I’m on site now using tethered 4G because site Wi-fi just keeps giving up. It really isn’t up to the job, in my opinion, and more than one device will just lead to further overload of the system. You’ll find several threads debating this same subject.

Given the rumoured amount the Club have spent on installing site WiFi I suspect it won;t be free anytime soon. What they could to is reduce the daily charge to a £1 which would make it a lot cheaper for families, and others and might actually increase the overall take! Like TW I tend to use my phone making use of my data allowance, I am surprised more people don't do the same?

"Free wifi?" nothing is free these days unless there is a hidden agenda for it to be introduced the ccc have introduced it if available?but then also they seem to be advertising on tv and giving us oldies all sorts of discounts on site stays,to try to fill sites even in the peak periods,it makes one wonder

I generally find the paid WiFi OK. However, I think that is probably because the charge puts off a lot using it. If it was included in the price "free" and made multi device I doubt this would be the case. Therefore my vote is to keep the charge and for those that want access to pay.

Free wi fi generally is not free but is paid for by an extra charge hidden in the fees paid. What we have now is a paid for service for those who want it and a slightly cheaper pitch fee for those who use there own provider or do not need it. Setting up this in remote areas where many sites are can cost upwards of £40,000 and fees are high enough as they are.

younger members are more likely to tether than use an unsecure low speed expensive wi-fi.
Thanks for publishing the précis of your, no doubt detailed and exhaustive, survey.
I note however that said younger folk are happy to use free public wifi and so I presume this may be simply an economic issue?

ok, should have said in my opinion. does not change the fact that public wifi (paid for or free) is not secure and you should never shop online or do banking or even use social media. mobile data is far more secure, faster, and more versatile.

But security has no bearing on whether the club should cease charging separately for its Wi-fi.

I am quite happy to use social media with my tablet on site wifi. If I were to give you full access to my social media data, including passwords, you might find a false date of birth and my first name and could, with passwords, lock me out. Not a problem to me at all.
As I said many folk use such 'free wifi' whether they should or not

You don’t seriously believe that the club removing its charge would do that, surely?😄
Adults need to take responsibility for their own actions and, if they’re as naive as you suggest, they'll not be swayed by CAMC's actions one way or the other.

We are off topic and probably best left there but I will say that folk make more problems for themselves on facebook than on wifi. I have seen the results of more than one ex-partner contacting the new partners friends and relatives using false IDs and stirring trouble.

Stirring - as in trolling, you mean. Well, well 😉

I did speak to the wardens on one site about this. The answer was that they relied on the local BT lines and the site was in a poor area for this. The site details do rate the signal so you can check before you go or log on to this forum to see what you get.

Thanks, WW. I was aware of that.

Surely the club should keep Wi-fi charges as they are, so that those who tether their own phones and use them are not penalised, by way of additional charges, for a service that they do not use.
On the odd occasion that I have tried the service, I have usually given up in disgust at the poor quality of the connection. Getting a better one off my phone using the data allowance.

For what it's worth , I think that if CMC start to notice a significant loss of revenue from wi-fi they will be left with 2 options ...1 to raise pitch prices to cover loss or 2.. remove wi -fi altogether from site's . Whichever road they take they will be in for a bumpy ride.

We don't often find a site Wi Fi that is good, when you look at the potential cost of installation and the effectiveness it makes you think what a waste of money, I am sure most commercial sites that have invested in Wi Fi are disappointed with the service provided as in most cases its unsatisfactory.
They probably have little chance of recouping the investment and receive lots of complaints about its performance.

The problem for the Club was that they made the decision to invest in WiFi which is rumoured to have cost a great deal just as 4G capability was coming onstream. Also during that time Fibre Broadband has also come on stream which has required even more investment. Not only that but relatively cheap data deals for people using smart phones brings into question whether you would want to pay the Club an annual fee for WiFi as well as your phone contract or whatever method you use to buy data. There are a few sites on the network where the mobile signal is poor and it's good to have the Club wifi as a back-up. The trouble is for occasional use the Club's wifi is very expensive and it might actually get more customers, and therefore more income, if it lowered the price. The Club have always been very reluctant to give much in the way of detail regarding the uptake of onsite wifi use so its very difficult to judge whether the investment was worthwhile.
