Thursday, Old Trafford, 16:11
Tea time Australia 369 for 5 wickets,
England requesting the urgent attention of a manicurist to De-grease 10 pairs of hands and one pair of Gloves, large, wicket keepers for the use of !
Total of 32 overs in the post lunch session.
Smith given out BUT a slow bowler gave him a life with a front foot No Ball, then Stokes had a twinge in his shoulder or side.
TRELLIS, please ask your 'sniper' to come & put me out of my misery Please, please, pretty please

England 301 for 9 - Follow on averted ( not that Aussies would have enforced it ) so
POOOF now this very minute Buttlers gone & only Leech, the Mighty number 11, was undefeated.
How much of a thrash, how many overs before the Crunch
This could utterly RUIN Brian's weekend unless the Alex take pity on me

So now it's The Kia Oval on Thursday. Not to win you understand, just to break the new players in.
Years ago Fred Truman used to aver that " It's harder for batsmen to get dropped, than selected, these days. I don't know whats going off out there "
And things ain't changed a lot, just the individuals. Basically Five front line batsmen drawing straws for the front four positions then any two allrounders and a 'keeper. The bowlers were often omitted at the selectors whim, just for the 'Flavour of the month' to be selected, then dumped never to be seen again.
Right now I'm wondering if there is an 'O' level GSC for Selectors?

Brian, there's no doubting your comments re the selectors! How can you keep selecting a Captain who makes poor decisions, makes few runs and drops catches for fun? Ok, Roy too has gone (brilliant one day player) and Woakes in for Whatshisname?
Barmy, (another Trumanism) just plain Barmy!!
Do you think this series has put the traditional Test Match to bed? Look at Stokes' innings at Headingley, Buttlers' fiery session yesterday not to mention all the innings of Steve Smith!!
He has single handedly changed the essence of batting (Truman was no batting coach but what about Boycotts' comments?) Watch any youngsters playing in the park from now on and you will see thousands of mini-Smiths, all with their little idiosyncrasies and not one of them getting their front foot to the pitch of the ball as another off drive is despatched to the boundary!
The game has changed and frustrating as it is, even comical at times, we still watch with renewed hope and expectations. Can't wait to see Archer bowling Down Under on fast pitches - first recorded 100mph ??

JR,
The thing that worries me most about cricket is the appalling standard of basic coaching. I was able to go through my career ( ! ) without wearing a helmet 'cos Randall Jones, Sports Master, INSISTED that we kept our eyes on the ball. None of this wincing and turning away, just letting the ball hit us where it would. If we'd ever tried that Randall would have made sure it hurt by repeating the whacks with the ball shaped wooden hammer used to break in cricket bats !! Granted nobody tried to bowl at 80+ mph ( 130+ kph ) but the pitches were such that every delivery was expected to "DO" something unexpected. And to see Test Match Players turning square on to the ball and being given out LBW with the ball hitting the outer edge of their back leg would have given him a touch of the screaming abdabs .
Sorry, but no, Brian's happy to be an old and old fashioned cricketer .

And over the last five ( 5 ) days they've proved once again that, despite certain folk songs, the times are NOT achangin' .
Yet again an Innings and 65 run defeat on a fairly flat track to an honest but not outstanding side.
The same comments apply now as late last year -- this is a rather different squad to the limited over thrashers, but just does not seem to be any more solid an outfit. Thrash, flash and wave the willow seems to be the England Mantra across the whole cricket spectrum and, if you will excuse me, -- IT AIN'T GOOD ENOUGH !! so there thrrruuupppttt

I think Archer may have done more good if he had just ignored the NZ Booby and not given him/her/it the press coverage on this occasion. Not that I think anything other than a ban would be fitting punishment, but most of the idiots accept a bit of Media coverage as a good result for their viewpoint. As Rocky2B says we must hope that the vast majority of sensible New Zealanders will step forward and get the yob banned.
Ah, well as the scientists used to say, now back to work.

I can't disagree with a single word you write Brian, but I guess these guys who are being racially abused are getting sick of burying their heads in the sand and remaining quiet.
In the current world climate on this subject, you'd need to be pretty moronic not to expect reprisals, should you be found guilty and it probably wont come from fellow spectators

Oh Dearie me, Brian's likely to have another night of broken sleep.
As mentioned elsewither the selectors have done it again . First test an unmitigated disaster for England and what have they done ?? Strengthened the bowling ?? No chance they've dropped the only 'spinner' they have, wicket keeper injured in the gym so replaced with another 'keeper ?? No way they've turned to a part-timer who is trying to cement his place as a batsman. So now we have half a team of dodgy batsmen, some steady medium fast bowlers, a part time keeper and two out of form ( for test matches) batsmen expected to spin bowl.
52 minutes gone and we have only one wicket { Batsmans fault - bad shot } for 39 runs. Will they have taken another wicket when my alarm goes ?? Doubtful
Scraped another Kiwi -- 2 for 39
