Haven't done awnings for years, however we do use our canopy from time to time. In the scheme of things I really don't think 8 foot wide caravans are a problem.

Never had a length problem as we are always, even at 8m long, within the length limit.
Only once, at The Firs at Belper, have we had a pitch reserved for us due to length. We had booked a serviced pitch, of which some were shorter, so wardens had allocated us a suitable pitch.

yes had to look it up, hadn't see it for years then used twice.

The site we were on this weekend had a small campervan on a grass pitch. The camper was parked correctly on the 'white' peg, the driveaway awning was then attached to the right hand side of the vehicle as you looked at it, then they opened up the front flap to form a canopy, all good there.
Then they sat outside around the canopy with a table and chairs and cooking station. By this time they were severely encroaching on the grass pitch next door, so much that the caravan had to park his car on the opposite side.
Had the camper ignored the rule 'white' peg and parked further to his left (where a car would have parked) then he wouldn't have been so close to his neighbour on the right. There was plenty of room for him to do so, I'm not sure why he didn't should the warden have had words, as there was not enough 'fire' break between him and his neighbour.
wide 8ft vans are not the only thing that can be a problem when pitching.

The magazine of the Camping and Caravanning Club this month contains a very brief mention of a new caravan from Bailey which is described as designed for first time caravanners. There is a comment about its unique awning that fits around the side and back "though this will make it a little too wide for a normal Club pitch".
So perhaps East Grinstead needs to make even more changes to remain The Caravan and Moreroom Club!

I have found C&CC pitches to be just as wide, and often wider. They do operate a regime based on bookings that include width as well as length rather than the binary awning/non-awning concept, so that their various pitch sizes can be matched to actual outfit size.

However they have brought in other new styles, as well as the new "older" Unicorns, which are all less than 8' wide, and there are still 4 styles which have 2 berth vans in their range.

Is it not meant to be the other way round - caravan on grass and car on hard? It's not as if the caravan drives out a lot (unless it is an unaccompanied motor caravan).

Me, too. When we had a cvan we were usually told to park on the grass.

No, that would not work. The caravan usually has to go on the LH side of the pitch as you look at it, according to the wardens we have encountered, so awning is on HS if wide enough.
Then car to the left of the van, or to the right of the awning if spacing and access for others permits. We have found that CCC is quite flexible if pitches are a good distance apart.

Then your awning would be on the grass, which is not ideal as far as we are concerned. The hardstandings we have seen are only wide enough for 2 "items".
If using one of CCC hardstandings I cannot see how you could put the van on the grass, whatever way round you go

Yes, it does seem to go against the grain a bit doesn't it.
We haven't been on a lot of C&CC sites but the ones we have been on the H/S seem to be longer and narrower than the C&MC. As you say car goes on the grass and quite often half the awning as well from what we've seen.
