We are traveling form Bilbao to Costa Orihuela in early January, we managed to get ferry sorted (big thanks to all who helped)

Solo driving as we are renting for a few months, 2 routes possible , one Valencia way the other Madrid way, has anyone experience of either route and are there hotels / motels en-route regularly like in France as we intend one overnight stop to break up the journey.

Any info regards journey/ tolls/ motorways etc much appreciated.

Gracias.

ViaMichelin gives toll costs as well as mileage - for instance motorway all the way and a mere 13 euros for tolls if you choose the 500 mile Madrid route.

Booking.com gives a whole range of hotels at a whole range of prices all along tne way. Choose where you will get to on day one and look at the options, but allow a bit for possible ferry delays at that time of year, and your price range might be different from mine.

    Take care.

The Madrid route could mean you encounter snow, although, having said that, Zaragoza/ Teruel get pretty nippy in winter. The AP7 will cost you more although you could use the A7/ N340 which sweeps inland and save a few bob.

    HiAndy

We live just inland from Orihuela, my advise would be Zaragoza and Valencia route in fact a night stop at both would be an excellent way to break up the journey south. Valencia is my favourite Spanish city and Zaragoza not too bad either both well worth a visit.

The A23 south from Zaragoza is an excellent motorway with not much traffic and toll free till you get to the other side of Valencia in fact if you take the old A7 from Valencia its toll free all the way to Alicante.

If it does snow on any motorway here the gritters are soon out and its not often they close the roads and then the sun comes out.

Where are you staying in Orihuela? know most of that coast.

    Looks like its this way:

    AP-68 Bilbao

    N-232 to Zaragoza

    A-23 N- 330 N-234 to Valencia

    A-7 N-340 to Orihuela

What do the N roads  mean ?

The N roads here are the same as A roads in the UK and usually pretty good, Playa Flamenca is a really nice resort unfortunately you will be quite close to La Zenia Boulevard so don't forget your credit card but

You mean the world famous Nottingham Forest.

Anyway enjoy your trip  and if you have any question just ask
