Route From Austria to Lake Como
I have a 7.5 m 3.5 Motorhome and wonder if someone has a route from Austria (Fern Pass area) to Lake Como possibly just staying out of Switzerland but if I have to go into the country not a big problem. Already got a Vignette for Austria begining of Sept so no problem for their motorways. Would be nice to have a recommendation for a site somewhere in the Como district. Would like to travel down the east side of the lake to include Madello De Lairio. The final destination will be Pesaro on the Adriatic Coast all set up for that with a Tolltickets pass. I have been travelling for several years preciously on the Brenner motorway but thought we might ring the changes

It is not a problem to drive through that part of Switzerland from Landeck in Austria to the northern end of Lake Como without needing a Swiss vignette because the road is not a motorway. The road runs all along the Engadine (river Inn) valley past Zernoz and St Moritz to the top of the Maloja pass - and it is not a steep climb at all. It is an unusual pass because the slope is gentle on the north side but steeper on the south.
From the top of that pass it is a steep winding descent to Lake Como in Italy but from the summit we watched tourist coaches coming up the hill - it is a big road so I don't think that a good Motorhome with good brakes and a good driver would have a problem going down. We didn't go on down because we were staying several days near St Moritz and looking around that part of Switzerland.
If you Google Maloja Pass video you will find films of the route.

As you mention Mandello Del Lario specifically, assume you know about the Moto Guzzi museum? (if you do want to go, check the opening times)
At Lecco, where we stayed IOHO the sites were not of a good standard (4 yrs ago), but as you have a campervan rather than caravan this may not be a problem.
Como itself was a great day out (speedboat on the lake plus ice cream everywhere) as was Bellagio (road from Lecco will need a little care) and Varenna.
Hope you enjoy!
