Have CAMC over priced some sites

I think you should also remember that gone are the days when people flocked enmass, from, in particular, industrial towns and cities at pre-set dates to take summer holidays, today peoples holidays both school and work are much more flexible.
Given the availability figures, they are clearly not being very flexible and flocking on the last weekend of the school holidays. Perhaps it is time to reconsider if this should still be included in peak?

We have just returned from an August holiday, and from a popular area, and can say that the lack of visitors is very noticeable. We travelled through and around 10 different counties, but stayed in Devon, visiting Cornwall on three days. We were astonished at how quiet places like Tavistock, Totnes, Cotehele were, normally bursting at the seams in August. We travelled down through Cotswolds, and then back through Wiltshire and Oxfordshire, and again, not as busy as we would expect. Weekends were bustling, but midweek very quiet. This year the weather has been poor, but I think it’s a lot more than that, a deal of general uncertainty until the country sorts itself out maybe. We passed lots of caravan sites, Club and private, none appeared full.
Conversely, I browse holiday cottage websites looking for short notice breaks. Despite it being peak season, they are full, even at the high Summer prices.

We got badly caught out by the Clubs pricing policy last year. October half term. I made a mistake and we had to find a site quite late in the day driving up off Exmoor. Without checking price I chose Hurn Lane, just for one night. I think it was close to £30 for that one night. Had it been the following day, the price reduced greatly. I wasn’t amused, and still beat myself up about it. We were on site from 7.30 pm until 9am. A lesson learned. That one nights stay saw our nightly average soar.

Where I’m staying over there I’m paying €34/night if I include ferries and red pennant which is about £650 by our 30 nights that’s another £22.50 so our nightly rate is about £52.50/night. No swimming pool or clubhouse included, but the sun is shining 🌞

In different parts of Europe the high/low seasons differ depending when the school holidays finish. In Norther Germany it was low season from about 10 August, Bavaria and Italy where we go next the low season is anywhere from 4th to 14th September.
Always happy to clarify and help

TDDA, while in your home area the weather may have been wet (certwinly of late), this year in the south the weather has been terrifically hot and sunny....so I couldn't blame the weather for low volumes
we had lunch outside at a pub on Shoreham Beach yesterday...it should have been heaving...14:00 on an August Sunday....we could have had one of a dozen tables outside and only a few watching the footie inside.
it certainly isn't a weather issue, there's an underlying reason many folk aren't doing things....

Daughter and family went to Cornwall last Friday/Saturday and the queues on both days travelling to the South West were herrendous. It did quieten down as they got into Cornwall. Perhaps more people are taking their summer break later. When working we always tried to fit in a Bank holiday as a sort of free day

Yep, my son and his girlfriend are in Corwall now, last year tent, this year holiday cottage.
I have a booking with the CMC in October, if at the same time I go Cornwall to a cottage at Charlestown, overlooking the harbour, it's less than £100 more than the site fees. So if the Cornish weather is not wet, where do you think I'm going?
Chuck in booming times at airports with holiday departures, the rise in cruises. What I think is being shown is that the CMC's core customer, the retired, are not being replaced by ME, it would appear the only one working amongst you!
So the rise in prices, in my opinion is reflecting lower attendance, but having a negative impact for the reason I've stated before, if your charging the same as the nicer site down the road, then down the road we all go.
Oh and if you want my first time caravan insurance business, chuck in a years membership! Just a thought

so all you can say is that it is a concern on members on this forum, are you trying to extrapolate that into all members, remember what JK said about what really happens, complaints from members about prices are very low.

it would appear the only one working amongst you!
And you have made a very good point, the regular posters must be one of the most biased samples (statistically speaking) ever. Apart from you who is working? (well I actually still do on a retired basis) so mostly retired. Mostly males? Mostly over a certain age. All quite well off (including KJ) or well off enough to afford a caravan or MH. Any children of school age? The list goes on.
Why should the club listen to anyone here?
Actually I have to write some exam questions in September to boost my 'limited' income (btw who has unlimited income even when they were working?) so I'll be using this as a question to show bias in a sample. Thanks everyone (one question = one weekend away)

Absolutely no problem I wouldn’t dream of advising some one like you
Just so others know I don’t tend to hide the truth of the full cost of touring over there. When at home we don’t incur ferry or additional insurance costs and if we stay on CLs we usually spend between £10 and £15/night. So lots of benefits, less miles on the car, no exchange rate, cheaper campsite charges even in the high season, etc.,etc

So do a lot of us who also tour abroad. I'm always puzzled by the claim that the forum demographic doesn't reflect the club as a whole. It is about as pertinent as claiming that forum members drive a particular colour tow car compared with the membership as a whole. Why should any particular subset not reflect the overall membership demographic. The only difference is possibly that retirees spend slightly more time on the forum.

I am not sure that Oneputt is negative about European touring David. I have no idea of their general view. With regard to cost however they are probably correct in as much as for them UK is cheaper.
I doubt that you choose to tour in Europe because it is cheaper overall. During my next tour the average cost will be around £25 a night I guess and if I toured for the same number of days (short 30 night tour) using sites such as you do David then I guess that it would bring the typical cost of stay to around £31 plus additional fuel. Not a problem

Thank you for a brilliant question for an exam. It just simply cannot, statistically impossible unless it is a random sample. And this certainly isn't. It is basic GCSE stuff CY
It's like asking those that smoke about smoking laws or policy, or asking year 7 only in a whole school survey.

and that must be the understatement of the year

very true, so why all the fuss, if you want to go somewhere and it costs £35 per night and you can afford that price then go, if you can't afford the price or don't want to pay so much then don't go. It is all about managing your budget, e.g. 40 nights away at £30 per night, or 80 nights away at £15. I quite like fish & chips every Friday night with a pint, but at todays prices i only indulge every other Friday, simple.

Oh come you lot another thread closed because of the usual banter stuff, no need.
At this time in my life I dont go abroad, I choose not to, but I do read practically everything that's posted on the topic, caravans especially but MH stuff too. I want good and bad, I can make my own mind up, just.
I'll probably semi retire in the not too distant future, then one plan is I tow caravan foreign parts, Michelle who will still be working, then flies out for a fortnight, 4 week gap or so, flies out again for same, I return later on.
Which reverts back to this thread, UK cost's have risen beyond what the touring population want to pay, are caravan sales still booming?
The club has always been expensive, again I left 3 years ago, very happy to stay, but felt I was being ripped off for my York weekend breaks, and that was because of an extension of peak! Only back because of 1 site in February.
Booked another site because of booking protocols. Will I honour the final booking in October? Thats weather dependent, a holiday cottage is only £94 more expensive, and its fully serviced 😁. Will I rejoin? dunno yet.
Do I represent a typical group within us? You decide.

Due to time constraints as my OH gives about 40hours a week looking after other people’s children as a cub and beaver leader we can only tour abroad in school holidays. That being the case it’s usually Easter and Summer so Mid season and high season prices. When I read posts of 90 days of course I’m a little envious as there are so many places we want to go.
Imagine a working family reading some posts on here and thinking great we can spend our precious summer holiday on a full amenities site for little more €22\night to find it’s actually going to cost somewhere between $30 and €50 +/night plus insurance/ferries etc.
In 2 days we have travelled 400 miles but fortunately, in Germany, diesel is only £1.08/Ltr

I know to include the "On" costs for some over their post's, I'm pretty sure others do too.
Internet.
But named sites, named night fees, are hugely beneficial to the likes of me who are in the planning stage for the future of over their caravaning.
That's if we decide to stick with the fixed bed caravan, (hence a dinky one, as a maybe) its just as easy now to book european holiday homes, cheap to expensive.
