Brittany Ferries Timetables

We have considered the Club Voyager on a number of occasions but the cost of joining, and the membership, means that, for us, using BF Plymouth/Roscoff, it is nowhere near the discount achieved via the club with an ITX fare of ferry and site vouchers.
This years saving was £462 so even if the BF Voyager was free the 30% saving would not match it, add on the fees and its even less of a saving.
Its worth saying that the route I use seems to be about the best for club ITX savings. When I have considered the Spanish route an ITX fare gave no saving.

Yes but...we are going across from Plymouth in August to meet the family at a holiday house, so car, only, no caravan, no site vouchers, day crossings, no cabins, no dogs, no children.
Sit down while I tell you the return fare. £578 from this Club and from Brittany Ferries alike. Yes £578. So I get 30% off with Club Voyage membership - which has more than paid for itself on just one crossing .

Yes but....if I use an August crossing to compare-out overnight with cabin-the BF price us £977. Club is £832 but an ITX with 4 vouchers is £766.
That makes the ferry £678. BF Club Voyager price is £683 but it would cost me £150 to join in year one and £75 thereafter.
So my best plan is to continue with ITX when taking the van and be your friend if I don’t!

Hi David, Maths is not my strong subject but having looked over this and other threads, and on other forums, many people mention the saving with the Voyager Club but usually with no mention of the cost to join, and stay in it, which was the point I was making.
As euror has pointed out there will be many occasions when an ITX is not the cheapest and I consider myself lucky to want to use a route that attracts such good savings.
Whilst the site vouchers may not be as attractive as Camping Cheques were I do use them, used 4 from last years booking at Domaine Des Ormes this year, so that adds to the value.

I've looked at the BF voyager club scheme for many a year but have always discounted it as we only tend to use BF for one of the two crossings we make each year and they tend to be in the low season.
While we have made good savings with ITX fares on camping cheques and this year site night vouchers, I believe that if we were to use BF for both trips and using the longer ferry to Spain then having the voyager card would make a big difference. There seems to be very little discount (or none at all) with the club on that route.
I did a trial booking with the club and BF for a Santander to Portsmouth crossing mid November, they both came out at the same price, so if I went down the route of a card then the price would be significantly cheaper once the initial cost had been made. After that time all other crossings could I believe be at an attractive price, however it does depend on the crossing and the time of the crossing.
If you take the Caen to Portsmouth 08.30 ferry mid Nov then the club comes out at £85 while BF are £175. If I had the Spanish card then I would get 15% off the BF price making it £148.75 even taking in to account a day cabin at a cost of £21 that BF crossing would still work out more expensive.
Like A&J for the time being I'm happy to play around with both systems and use 'friends' where and when possible

Hi TG, a while back I was puzzled that when checking prices on different devices, laptop/ipad,I was getting quite different prices. I then saw a post recommending that you delete history and cookies as this often leads to 'inflated' prices due to you visiting the site several times.
I took the advice and the prices became consistent.

Sorry think there might be a misunderstanding.
The prices were consistent, BF and the club both quoted the same price, for the same crossing, with the same cabin.
What I was meaning is that there was no discount with the club on that crossing, so if you used a 'friends' discount you would actually get a better price with BF or if you were a member in your own right the saving on that crossing would be a good one.
Thanks for the tip, however its something I tend to do on a regular basis since my son (who works in IT) told me about 'cleaning' my laptop. I don't have a smart phone and I only use my tablet for internet when away, in the house its always the laptop I use.

TG, I guess that £85 fare is a discounted caravan go free fare?
even our small 6.4m MH is between £144 and £203 single fare on that route mid November ....
there is some serious discrimination going on here....I know I've said it before but in this respect the Caravan and MH Club certainly ain't.
how can a unit twice the length go for half the price???

Its the 08.30 boat, I think it must be discounted not many caravans out and about at that time of year I remember when we came back that route a few years ago 12th Nov cost us £210 one way.
The prices for the rest of the days sailings are the same as BF has on their system. This is where the BF card would come in to its own.
I totally agree with your last sentence, I voiced it back when we had the MH. However nowadays I'm more than happy to get the discount its a long drive from Scotland so something has to work in our favour.

Hi BB, the it 'aint fair cos we pay more argument' that has been covered on here before and ,so far as I can see, nothing has changed from the previous times in that it is not the club that determine the discounts its the ferry company.
If you can get a caravan goes free fare then its always going to be cheaper than for a MH on the same crossing-it may be twice the length but you only pay for half of it.
To balance this you get to stay on all those free or very cheap aires!
I also seem recall that others pointed out deals that applied to MH only.?
0 -
yes , i realise that it's BF that set the prices, however it would be nice to have the club lobbying for a 'half a MH goes free' deal to even things up..
BTW, I didn't know BF managed European aires...
...and I must have missed the MH only deals....

Hi DP, no I am presuming that BB does!

I’ve got this mental image of double decker with the roof sliced off!
Think the MH deals were Stenna and DFDS?
0 -
ah...we generally use BF heading south...
0 -
..yes, we do, but nothing to do with BF who are giving caravanners farry discount.

Hi BB, was thinking more 'swings and roundabouts' than saying its due to BF.

Hi
If anyone would like a Spanish ferry code give me a shout?!

I understand BB frustration that a MH is charged more than a car/caravan on some routes. Having been there myself.
What has always irked me, is that if you change the measurement of the car height by a few cm's the price can go up by £20 or £30, Why? the caravan is still going on the ferry behind the car, the caravan is still higher than the car, so why is there a difference in the price of the car. Its not as if you will have to go on another deck you will exactly where you would have been, as the caravan's height determines that.
Its the same if you change the car length by a few cm's, yet the caravan length goes up by .5m so a caravan at 6.1m will be in the under 6.5m price, a car gets charged for an extra .2 m but the caravan is still .3m under its top length. The overall length of the combined unit hasn't changed yet the price has gone up.
Bewildering or what.

I always quote the towcar height as < 1.85 metres (a Discovery 2 at 1.95m nominal height) as it's lower than the caravan when booking direct via BF and have never had a problem. Similarly with the rear wheel mounted cycle carrier - as it's between the car and caravan it adds nothing to the overall length.
I have done test bookings stating its actual height and run into the double overheight problem. I think BF take a sensible approach in that they accept the height of the outfit overall. It's the maximum height that governs where we can be put.
If you look at the ticket booths you will see there's a line at 1.85m so that the operators can see at a glance whether you're overheight.

AD & Ian, many thanks for your comments it would appear that common sense is not a thing of the past after all.
Now to just measure the new vehicle, as what the online information says and what the owners manual says are two different things

Perhaps "boy racer" lowered suspension is the answer.
