Advertising not recommending?

Many’s the time in Best Reads we point each other towards a bargain on offer by an online seller. You know the one - think river and rain forest.

Some time ago having made a considerable saving on a car purchase I mentioned the company on here. I was puzzled as to why, a short time later, the content was removed and the explanation put forward by a mod was that it had probably been deemed as advertising.
As said by others it is unclear what the issue may be here and could be down to a misinterpretation or similar but anything that puts people of posting is regrettable.

There is another post on here regarding petrol and diesel from a particular supplier which contains various references to other suppliers and includes references to several supermarkets.... Better also give that post a wide berth from now on...

……then there’s the name of the fuel company giving the offer which the club has promoted so heavily…

How about that 'recommendation' that appeared here on a thread for a caravan 'Hoover' which isn't manufactured by 'Hoover'. On the strength of these recommendations I went out and bought one. Not quite 'dysing' 😚 with death but I'm most disappointed with the battery which after just two years is now only good for 10 mins even on Eco mode.

There are clearly a lot of posters who are confused by what has happened to the OP.
I think it would be useful as a teaching aid if the mod/club who changed the OP's post would state why what was written was considered as advertising and why all the above examples are acceptable and not advertising?

Every forum I’ve ever read and used has no problem with products/services being mentioned. The difference is that advertising when it’s blatant promotion and usually for self gain is banned.
None of the examples given, nor the OP’s mention of the boatyard, fall into the latter category as far as I can see which makes this whole issue somewhat farcical.

yes, unless Tony had put, or even implied somehow that this is my boat yard and I'm going to make money on it if you use then how can it be classed as an advert?

Bizarre bit of editing, I was following Tony’s thread with interest, as we like to do activities while away, so would have been interested in knowing where Tony’s experience took place. Didn’t dare ask after I saw the editing.
Thinking back to my Teacher Training days, one of the things drilled into me regarding dealing with groups and individuals was the need to be consistent in terms of how discipline and order were maintained, otherwise folks get confused. Possibly a bit of an innocent mistake on this one.

I've reported this thread to Rowena in the hope that we can get clarification on exactly what is permitted in terms of advertising or, more particularly in this case, recommending.
In the meantime, I'll lock the thread as it's actually questioning the moderation. We'll let Rowena make the decision on its future.
Thanks to all contributors.

Hi everyone,
Apologies for the delay in reply. I have been out of the office.
Recommendations are more than welcome on the forum if there is no obvious connection with the person recommending the business. It may be that the post in question the moderator thought there was a connection. We are always happy to review so if the person drops us an email to explain they were just recommending and don't have any connection to the business we can edit if needed.
FYI in the guidelines we state:
Do not post anything that could be interpreted as self-publicity, including spamming and advertising (as well as pyramid selling or chain letters, selling or soliciting).
I hope this helps clarify and please do drop me an email communitymanager@camc.com if you would like me to review.

I don't have shares in Aldi, Fishers, or Meindl boots.

Thanks for the explanation, Ro. I’m pleased common sense has prevailed.

I don't have any connection with Mylor Boat Hire. They are quite unusual in that they are one of only a very few hire firms I can find that hire out small sailing cruisers on the sea. I also mentioned in my original post that they hire out motor boats and open day boats. Perhaps that was too much information. It was the main reason we travelled all the way to Falmouth from Ipswich. As I said in my post, Falmouth must be one of the best sailing locations for small boats.

I think it would be fitting now if the bold type moderator edit was removed from your OP, Tony. That would remove any possible vestige of doubt.
Perhaps someone will report my post to help achieve this end.
