Member Offer: My Esso Card

Probably for the same reason you keep repeating that you won’t use your card anymore as it’s not worth the trouble. . .Yet you return to post. We all lose sight of the origins of the thread👍🏻😊

You are correct as we did stop using the card for a couple of months as the savings were not worth the effort. However recently this has improved with savings of at least 5p or more.
I am guessing but with this Iranian issue, just in case there is a huge increase in the cost of fuel, we filled up the tank on Saturday at the lower rate.

An interesting point Surfer and any instability in the Middle East tends to lead to an increase in the price of crude oil. However, before we in UK lose sleep over the risk to our oil supplies; over the last 20 years we have dramatically decreased our dependence on oil/gas from this area. Most of our oil now comes from Norway, Saudi Arabia is way down the list (source Statista), with most of the oil from the Middle East going to Asia (some 75%). Nevertheless, any interruption of supply from the Middle East would place a strain on other suppliers and hence probably increase the price but this would be countered by the fact that the world's demand for oil is slowly declining. A complex subject. Let us hope that the great minds can sort out this serious situation soon.

Further to my post yesterday about BMW's savings using his card in Europe. I have today received the following from Pump King:
"You can use your Pump King card in Europe. We charge the pump price at the mid market rate of the European Central Bank to GBP and there are no foreign exchange charges."
Could BMW tell us how much he paid compared to European Supermarket prices for his fuel.

I've found recently that the prices coming through on my pump king texts are proving to be the same as the pump prices at my local Esso stations. I'll keep the card in my pocket for the very rare occasions I need to fill up at a motorway Esso, but otherwise, not much benefit at this level.

In reply to comeyras:- The tour we did included Luxembourg and Austria, where fuel is relatively inexpensive. We used the Esso card in Switzerland, Italy and Germany wherever we came across an Esso filling station without seeking a supermarket because of the Pump-King benefits. I'm unable to give you the price comparisons, but I am satisfied that we did OK!

Decreased, because obtaining 30 miles per gallon means I use less fuel than obtaining 25 miles per gallon. But people tell me that I'm pedantic :-)

Further to my previous post. I've just spoken to the UKs Financial Conducts Authority, Pump-King ( the company you deal with for the fuel transactions) are not authorised by them which basically means they have no power over the company. People, be very aware of this company. They do not have phone numbers you can contact them on and in my case they have robbed me of £67.94 with little legal power to get my money back. Come on caravan club you should be protecting yourselves and dis-associating the CAMC from this second rate company.

Please let us know what happens.
I am using the PK card, but still have reservations about their administration.
I just decided to look at the Tc&Cs, and see they have changed again.
- We're now contracting with a company called Horizon Fuel Limited.
- Horizon Fuel was only set up in June 2019.
- I certainly was NOT notified of yet another change to the Ts&Cs.
It is very hard to find valid PK (or Horizon Fuel) contact information. I understand this is illegal. https://www.hallaminternet.com/internet-marketing-and-the-law-legal-issues-affecting-you-and-your-website/
Edited to add link to the new Ts&Cs: https://pump-king.co.uk/Horizon-Fuel-Limited-Terms-&-Conditions.pdf

PS. I never got a straight answer to how quickly my card would be deactivated if stolen and what my liability would be.

Just done some digging on companies house. PK Fuel still exists, so Horizon Fuel is not simply a rename. They have different registration numbers.
Horizon haven't registered as having bought PK Fuel.
Horizon claim that they have nobody with significant control. https://beta.companieshouse.gov.uk/company/12034098/persons-with-significant-control
It seems very smoke and mirrors.

What I found out while travelling from Devon to Abbey Wood that it is great on the A303. Numerous esso stations on-route so instead of getting charged £1.37 / £1.39 for the diesel I got charged the cheaper rate. Locally I don't save much if any when compared to supermarkets, but when travelling it was great.

I have been running my Toyota Landcruiser on super market diesel for a number of years and suddenly became away that it was not starting up as quickly so I booked it in to my local fuel injection specialist who I have been using for the past 35 years, the fitter had a quick look round under the bonnet then asked me what fuel i was using and I told him my local super market. at this he smiled and told me to go away and to use premium fuel for a few weeks and see if this cured the problem. Not only did it cure the starting problem but increased the mileage when towing my van from 24 mpg to 29 mpg.so the Esso card not only saves me money on using premium fuel it is better long term for the fuel system, I duly rang the fitter back to thank him for his help and he stated it was false economy to run on low quality diesel long term especially on later model diesels, but then again who would pay £60k for a motor to run on cheap fuel ?

5mpg difference is pretty spectacular. I'd have thought it would have been promulgated more extensively and with great fanfare by now if that were the norm.

I have had the card for a while now and I haven't used it for the last 6 weeks because it is dearer than my local petrol station, the last quote for the week was £1.306 and our local petrol stations Diesel is £1.269 which is making a mockery of your claim that you save 5p a litre on average, so I believe the card is just a sales Gimmick

This has been going on for years , that supermarkets can sell cheaper fuel because its a lower grade . How come ? its al refined at same refineries ? Now Witherspoons beer is rerack so its cheaper .,so a brewer told me

I usually buy the cheapest Sainsbury/Morrisons/Asda diesel as their outlets are all about the same distance from home. Last weekend I was in the Lake District and bought the locally available BP brand.
So my average consumption up to that purchase included towing a big caravan from Scotland and quite a bit of roaming around narrow lanes solo. The computer reading was 18.1 mpg.
After fueling with BP and towing back to Scotland the computer showed an overall average of 19.9 mpg. Now, I don't hang about on motorways and dual carriageways so I expect the consumption to be rather poor, though I don't put any faith in the computer's stated figures, just use them for comparison.
This would seem to show that the BP fuel was returning a much better number of miles per gallon on a steady run.

That's about it. Whatever hills there are up one way are down the other, so it works out flat in the end.

Yup, I always had you down as one. I’m glad I facilitated your coming out of the closet. You are most welcome👍🏻😊

That would be a Flat Earth Closet I guess . . . ? I closed the door afterwards anyway.

We have not bought supermarket fuel for a number of years. When we did use it and then switched to a branded fuel, we did notice a decrease in consumption however the bonus was that both the petrol and diesel cars seem to perform or run better.
The main reason is not the actual fuel which all comes from the same source, but the additive that is added by the various different brands. Although the extra mile or tow per gallon is appreciate, a better and cleaner engine is very welcome as less maintenance. Luckily we all have freedom of choice on how to spend our hard earned cash!

I always fill up at Morrison’s, my fuel consumption is never the same on the same journey. Traffic conditions can determine how much fuel you use. One day the traffic is heavy meaning I use more fuel due to using a low gear more . Sometimes there is a strong headwind while towing meaning you use more fuel.

A logical mind at work DT👍🏻. Isolated rolling roads under test conditions will be the only accurate test. The rest is fantasy/inaccurate guesswork. . .But it supplies laughs👍🏻😊
