I'm sorry that your original question has lead on to you learning you may not have a suitable combination outfit. Quite a shock to your system and a knock to your confidence I should think. But better to learn now than finding out much later when you might be in a serious position.
I think there's plenty of good comments from knowledge folk. Have you towed before? Both this club and the other, as well as private instructors offer lessons.
I dont know where to find the towing advice referred to by Tinwheeler, it isn't at the top of the page I come in via. The search facility here isn't great but I'll see if i can add a link to it should i find it!
Edit - I think I've found what was being referred to. Click HERE to view.
I sincerely hope that it helps. Do let us know how you get on.

The Advice and Training tab, B2👍🏻
It's not just towing but all sorts of techie stuff.

Totally agree. I have been reading this thread but without sufficient technical knowledge to contribute usefully. But I'm utterly appalled by the recent blatant attempt by a couple of posters to post irrelevant and provocative posts. CT at its very (weekend) worst, in my opinion.

I don’t see a link, B2.😕
I couldn’t link to it because it’s a tab with a drop down menu.

crobinson9 – Just a thought - Maybe it would be wise to sit down with your husband and talk this situation through as it appears from the posts above your tow vehicle/caravan combination is most likely illegal. I realise from your posts it is the caravan you really want but now you have a little more knowledge maybe rethinking the situation would be the way forward. Perhaps the two of you could return to the ‘dealer’ as others have said and explain that you feel you were given the wrong advice re the combination and could they please exchange the caravan for one of a more suitable weight/length. The only other alternative that I personally can see is to change the tow vehicle though for what I wouldn’t have a clue. Bear in mind that some pitch providers may have restriction on types of caravans and tow vehicles (eg no commercial vehicles with company advertising on them) Good Luck

My husbands ford Ranger states braked capacity of 3500kg? it’s so confusing - the dealer said that it is classed as a commercial pickup and therefore ok to tow. I will look more into it before going back to him so I have my facts right .

Will do - thanks for the advice . Seemed to have caused a bit of friction with my question . Apologies it was meant with no malice or intent to cause any upset .

It works, JO, and may help but I was referring to the whole Advice and Training section which will be of use to the OP on various issues as shown.

Because I am on a mobile not on desk top it’s all set out differently so unfortunately no drop box. However, I have located the link thanks. Just one last question- the specification on the ranger states 3500 and the towing regs say 3500 and over - does that not mean that it’s allowed ? Back to the drawing board and speak to the dealer again see if anything smaller although I don’t think there is any German ones that would be legal if this is the case. There is a few hobby’s but no LMC .

Hi cr, so far as the tow vehicle is concerned what others have been referring to is that it must weigh 3500kg or more to legally tow your van which , it seems, has a body length of more than 7m.
The vehicles stated towing capacity is not relevant in this instance.
I hope you are able to come to a happy conclusion but would agree with others that sadly, but perhaps not surprisingly, you have been ill advised.
There are many German vans that would be suitable including the Hobby that we had for seven years.

The size of the LMC dictates it must be towed by a vehicle with a max weight over 3500kg. The Ranger weighs 3270.

There are many German vans, including LMC, that would be suitable for your tow vehicle, but the question is whether that dealer stocks them, and whether they would be suitable for your needs.
How many people will be sleeping in the van?
Not many people will buy a twin axle that size as a first van, and in Germany these larger vans are usually used on seasonal pitches, as suggested earlier, and our continental colleagues usually tour with much smaller caravans.

Know the calculator doesn’t have my model on there . I may have found a fix around tho !

Can upgrade MVG - suppose it depends on cost and practicalities .

And if they do it in the UK not just Oz haha

There’s 4 of us but have two young grand children that may come with us too. It will work itself out I’m sure -

With a van that length, there will be a few Club sites that it will be too long for, so you will need to check before booking.
The club ask for outfit length, for a caravan this is what is also known as the shipping length, I.e. total length including the drawbar.
There are length limits due to pitch size and/or access.
Be aware too that a few commercial sites will not allow German twin axles, or certain brands of van, or just any twin axle......it's a bit of a minefield!

It just seems more trouble than it’s worth - my husband didn’t want a caravan at all and is not happy about it so this will just tip him over the edge . I may just get rid back to dealer if I can - don’t fancy my chances tho so an expensive item to leave standing in storage with no joy to be had from . .

You could always get an awning with space for a bedroom pod.
Some have end extensions for sleeping in where you can have a permanent pod, but I believe you can also get removable pods that you can take away during the day if you need the space.
In the camping trade, many years back, they were called "inner tents" or just bedrooms, no idea what term is used these days. (My OH's parents had a shop selling camping equipment back in the 50s, 60s and 70s)
You can also just use these "pop up tents" inside an awning.

Yes was looking at those - I just don’t know what to do now about the van. I love it but it’s just not going to work thereis too many obstacles . My son is 13 and just been called up for England u15s football - plays for Derby county so wanted to be able to take him training somewhere then pitch up for a weekend somewhere near where he has a match - it was supposed to be quite stress free and uncomplicated , but doesn’t seem to have worked out that way. I am a social worker so am very busy all week and work lots of hours this was supposed to be my bolt hole 😢

If you are going to be towing it on short trips, rather than siting it somewhere, a smaller van would probably be more practical, and you could add an awning when there are more people going along.
I would go back to the dealer on this, get him to find you something suitable, and legal! You could look at Caravan Finder to identify suitable layouts and models.
