What are reviews for?

I don't know which review you're referring to David (I'll look later) but their could be a very simple explanation. For example, we don't have children with us. So when we review a site we either give 1 or 0 for "family friendly" - if everything else is, in our opinion, 5 we would give it an overall 5.
Edit - found it - the review for Buxton - and the explanation is just as I thought.

It looks like 3 fives . The only one below that is good for families, which is shown as a 3, possibly due to the absence of a play area. A good review. I particularly like that it is realistic on the walk to town, which makes a pleasant change. Some times quoted on reviews, for local walks, are positively Olympian.😂

I think it depends upon the review site itself and how they want to calculate the overall scores?
Are you thinking of going to Buxton as you were looking at it?

bit like the farmer who had 27 sheep in his field, but when he rounded them up he had 30.

been there so many times when growing up, so too much like a day trip to me

Yes, 4.5 is four and a half, n'est-ce pas? But every day should be a learning experience!
Actually, on reflection it may well be that the reviewer realised that, mathematically, where a set of data is distorted by a single reading the median is a better representative average.
So in this case, arrange the data in order - 3,5,5,5 - and the "average" (median - middle value) is 5. Sorted!

or the average could also be the mode, which is still 5
If, as David wants, more emphasis is to be given to smaller values then the harmonic mean could be used, that would give an answer of 4.28... - rounded to 4.

it's what we do best, always happy to help

that makes it quite interesting actually M, as while the mean, median and mode all still round up to 5, the harmonic mean now rounds down to 4 so I assume the club doesn't use that.
So... a review scores four 5s and an unknown score (let's be traditional and call it x). What decimal (or fractional) value must x be greater than to give a rounded HM of 5?
Algebraic methods only, numerical methods will not be credited.

We never bother with star ratings on Club Sites. Much prefer to look at the little descriptive graphics. We like the Zzz one the most. Well, after the doggy one of course......🐾🐾🐾😁

Some of my favourite types of review give directions on foot to the nearest shop, pub or attraction. These details are often elusive on site details or you ask someone on site and they bend their heads in a hard to follow direction sequence. We once got totally lost trying to find somewhere in Ireland using the head nodding method, round the corner, up there and down through the woods.

Hi everyone,
Thank you for your feedback on reviews. We do ask that reviews, like the forum itself, is not used as a means of complaint as we do have the proper channels for complaint i.e. on site at the time or if not resolved during your stay then to the relevant team to investigate - which can be found in the contact us page on the website.
Saying that, people are more than welcome to express their views and opinions and we do try and respond where we can. We do get hundreds/thousands of reviews during peak seasons (it keeps me busy!) so comments can get missed which is why we ask people not to use reviews as a channel for complaints.
We love to hear about the site in the reviews, things to do in the area and recommendations and do really value constructive feedback.

Just for info - We used C & CC site @ Oxford as an overnighter as it was convenient for roads. We were aware that it was in an urban environment so could be noisy (as per the book info) but found it too noisy mainly because whilst we were there the trains were active well into the late evening. Some pitches are further away but we were not given a choice even though the site was not full at the time and there were alternative quieter pitches so I doubt we will use it again.

I think any site in a similar situation location wise would risk being prone to some noise, even just the general everyday hubbub of living in a City. We have stayed there but didn't find the noise a distraction and inside the van were hardly aware of it. I appreciate that we are all different in how noise can impact on us but we didn't find it any worse than many sites we have stayed on. Compared to being on Henley Four Oaks parked against the road boundary it was positively quiet!!!

We too have stayed at the C&CC's Oxford site and certainly didn't notice any excessive noise, and we usually stay on remote CLs.

Have a look at the C&CC reviews David... (OH and a friend heading for Silverstone overnighted there but they headed for a local pub and slept ok after that )
I still wish the review pages on the actual site details had a little bit of info or a link to advise about adding a review. I found the review advice on the Community Guidelines but I suspect that most of us wouldn't look there unless it was linked.
