Well sadly it has to be done David. Just like going through security at airports.

Actually it is good to know the border force are doing their job diligently.

Its been fairly slow for a while, it sometimes helps if you can confirm you have checked inside the van before driving off the ferry.

There was a report last week of a coach travelling from Dover being stopped on the M4 near Swindon and an 18 year old from, I think, Syria being found clinging to the undercarriage of the coach.  One can only imagine the desperation of such an individual to risk life and limb that way. So any checks that improve the safety, not just of our country, but also, in fairness, the lives of such unfortunate folk as that are to be welcomed.

I don't think anyone was disagreeing or lecturing, were they, David, just adding comments to your informative OP as is the way on forums.

+1 there M, I often wonder about that, can life wherever they have come from be so bad and the promise of a life here so good, that they risk suck things?

Agree M, horrendous news of body falling from Heathrow bound plane just today.

I hope the safety checks don’t delay folks already tired from long journeys, but it’s good to know they are carried out.

yes, the story makes terrible reading, especially the part:

A bag, water and some food were found in the landing gear compartment on the aircraft when it landed.

Both last year and this year, we were searched prior to boarding. At Portsmouth last year they enquired whether it had been done but nothing else. At Dover last month, nothing at all. Perhaps checks are intelligence driven.

agree with AD and DD....the search 'going out' at Poole is usually very thorough, yet hardly a cursory glance at Cherbourg...

surely the wrong way round....no one is looking to smuggle themselves out of the UK are they?

Outward from Plymouth is curious too.

Because we have the only streamlined Eriba in a sea of white monsters they usually pull us over - I think they want to look inside to see how on earth we manage in such a small space - and call their mates over to have a look too.

One of them usually says Have you got any knives? We say yes and show him the full set. He says OK and off we go. All nice people.

I'm as much a Europhile as some people on here but I can't understand it when people cannot see the inherent beauty of the island that we live on. We have just completed a 6 week round trip taking in some of the most beautiful scenery found in Europe, calling in on the Lake District, Northumbria and Yorkshire and quite often on a walk would comment that we would be expressing joy if we found such vistas opening before us if we were on holiday in Europe.

Just relax folks and enjoy the countryside. As Brue quite rightly said on another thread recently we choose to take our holidays in lovely spots most of the time and leave the grime behind. If you can't get abroad, and we have been frustrated twice in the last 12 months, then don't holiday with a grimace but embrace whats in front of you.

I think some of the searches are intelligence driven. When we came back from St Malo a couple of years ago, they were searching thoroughly inside all caravans and Motorhomes. They are not really set up for it there, as the checkpoints are only just off  a roundabout. This resulted in queues building back into the town and a fairly chaotic situation.
