Resia/Reschen Pass diversion

For those of you planning to use the Resia Pass between Landeck and Bolzano please be aware that the section of road number 180 between Pfunds and Nauders is closed and a diversion is in place. The diversion takes a tourtuous route over the tops to Martina in Switzerland and then follows the river Inn for a distance before re-joining the 180 again near Schalkl (when going north).

We drove this route on Saturday and whilst the diversion is OK for motorhomes (depending on the size of course) I wouldn’t like to tow a caravan over it since the numerous hairpin bends are quite narrow and steep. Motorway signs on the A22 Brenner Autostrada were saying that coaches are currently banned from the Resia pass but we did meet a couple of coaches on the diversion that were going south.

The border controls at the Swiss section of the diversion were quite relaxed but part of the route along the edge of the river Inn is on an unmade road which added to the delays.

Thanks, sounds one to avoid altogether for the time being. Any idea how long the diversion is in place? The alternative for avoiding tolls for motorhomes is via the old Brenner Pass.

Thanks Dave for the heads up on this. That road seems prone to roadworks. Quite a few years ago, when we had the caravan, we were staying at Prutz with the intention of using the Pass. Luckily someone on the site mentioned that there were roadworks and diversions so we voted with our feet and went back to Innsbruck and over the Brenner. This thread is perhaps a useful reminder that it's a good idea to check for any roadworks before using this route?

We used the route in 2016 and really enjoyed it, our stay in Prutz and trip up the glacier.

There were roadworks on it when we used it, light controlled, but it does sound a tad more of a problem now.

As saisd it would be useful to know so thanks to the OP for raising it. We once had to follow a diversion from near to Lucerne en route to the Gotthard Tunnel. As we neared the junction to get back on the motorway a guy in hi viz jacket flagged us down.

"Gotthard?" he said-yes said I-NON says he! and hands me an information sheet telling me the tunnel was closed, due to a rockfall causing a fatal accident, and detailing the diversion-all 96 miles of it.

In the circumstances you are just thankful its not you that had the accident but had we known we could have avoided the area and possibly the stress.

Sorry, I’ve no idea how long the diversion will last. There have been numerous storms in the area recently and we’ve never seen the river Inn so high, it was a raging torrent so I suspect there has been some landslides onto the 180 road south of Nauders.

The diversion road along the river Inn from Martina towards Landeck is in the process of being either rebuilt or reinforced due to landslides. There was a strip of tarmac going south but the single carriageway north bound was very rough indeed.

Thanks. >Michelin Traffic< is a good one to use to check road conditions anywhere in Europe. Ticking to view  road works shows the pass to be closed.
