Brittany clockwise tour

Enjoyed Brittany so much last September (great weather too), returning for 4 weeks in June going in a clockwise tour starting near Vannes after a night halt. Thinking of 4 nights at Le Conleau which seems a good spot to walk into Vannes and also to explore the Gulf of Morbihan. Read mixed reviews about this ACSI site. Is it OK?

Then it will be Camping du Poulquer at Benodet for10 days or so.Again,is it a reasonable choice?

After that, who knows? But I would welcome some recommendations going north and then north-east. Looking for sites near pretty villages on or near coast, reasonable size pitches, good walks close by, not far from a supermarket and a peaceful atmosphere that would suit us 70 year olds.

Thanks

So many...but either of the two sites at Chateaulin (Rodaven and La Pointe) as a base to get out on to the remote Crozon peninsula ,

either of the two sites at St Pol de Leon (Trologot and Ar Kleguer) to walk out  to the Ile Callot at low tide, or take a boat out to the Ile de Batz, and to have lunch on the terrace at Les Alyses in Roscoff.

either of the sites at Matignon and Pleboulle (Vallon aux Merlettes and Fleche a l'Ane) to explore  the lovely stretch of coast around Cap Frehel and St Jacut, and close enough to drive to Dinan, Dinard and St Malo.

Does Benodet deserve a full ten days?

If you want to do a lot of walking then you might like a walking guide that we use. It;s by Charles Davis called Walk! Brittany (North), or obviously South or maybe both. It's printed by Discovery Walking Guides of Northampton

There's also the Sunflower series that include Brittany.

Can't really help as we did it anti-clockwise last year. Le Conleau is a pleasant location although we stayed on the MH aire rather than the site. It's a two mile walk into town but there's a bus stop right outside.

We visit Brittany every year. As you might guess, we love it !

We especially like Les Plages de Beg Leguer (ACSI 1411) about 5 kms. west from Lannion. The site is beautifully kept and has glimpses of the sea below. Lannion is a lovely town with many old buildings, an interesting shopping area and has Leclerc and Geant supermarkets. There are many interesting places to visit such as Perros Guirec, Locmariaquer and, of course, the Pink Granite coast.

There are many other beautiful places and sites in Brittany - I could go on for ever but I'll leave it there !!

We have wonderful memories of Brittany from 1989.  We had a few nights near St. Pol de Leon on a site called La Chaise du Cure - needless to say there should be an acute accent on the e in Cure.  The site was nothing more than a totally empty field bordered by the sea so we pitched about 20 yards from the shore.  The facilities consisted of a cold tap and a chemical disposal point.  Apart from one night, when we were joined by an English caravan, we had the field to ourselves.

That was before the days of the French discovering the magic of caravan life so there were no other sites in the vicinity, at least none that I can remember.

Thanks ET for the suggestions. Having digested their website and the revbiews, Vallon aux Merlettes at Matignon sounds right up our street and provides the opportunity to explore more of the nearby coastline. We stopped at sites near Dinard and Cancale last September and so were able to visit St Malo and Dinan.

We passed through Chateaulin on the way to and from Pors Peron (excellent site run by English couple, great beach) and may try one of the sites mentioned to have a look at the Crozon peninsula.

A review suggested there is a smell when the tide goes out at St Pol de Leon but this could be another possible destination even though I am returning via Cherbourg. Much appreciated.

Visited Benodet when at Pors Peron and were quite taken by the place, the beach and the Camping du Poulquer site I mentioned when I went round it. So might drop anchor there for a while as long as it is not crowded out by being listed in the C&MC overseas sites brochure.

Stayed at Les Plages de Beg Leguer (Volvo's suggestion) for 8 nights last September and thoroughly enjoyed it even though the restaurant was closed for the season. Likely to return there to enjoy the Pink Granite coast again.

Walked around Tourony Camping to give it the once over but there did not seem many vacant pitches, it was near to a busy road and there was no pool. Great location, though, to see some wonderful harbours and beaches. Thanks WTG.

Thanks for the other replies too - they all help!

If you like a quite site Le Bois Fe La Palud In Plougoulm near St Pol De Leon is lovely. It is a municapal  site with some good views down the valley and a nice walk a long an inlet to Plage du Guillec.

The Crozon peninsular is certainly spectacular. We stayed at Camping les Pins, which is not on the coast, but centrally positioned for visiting the 3 peninsulars of Crozon.

And if you can drag yourself away from the Brittany coastline, Huelgoat is worth a visit. South of Roscoff, a lovely moorland village. The campsite is a couple of miles outside Huelgoat, in a quiet riverside spot. Some good walking and cycling in the area.

    Have a great trip!

Thanks Pliers. Might well try Camping Les Pins.Have heard the Crozon peninsula is pretty spectacular.

Can anyone recommend a day spent looking around Rennes. Is there much to see? Could well stay for a couple of nights at camping des Gayeulles en route from Cherbourg to Vannes.

From Rough Guide....."something of a patchwork quilt, consisting of grand eighteenth century public squares interspersed with intimate little alleys of half timbered houses. It's quite a pleasant city to stroll around for half a day..."

Is that what my mother used to call damning  with faint praise?
