Great Dolomite Road Italy
Does anyone have any experience of driving the Great Dolomite Road west to east with a caravan? I've seen a few You Tube excerpts and since trucks and buses use the route I'd assume a caravan wouldn't have any problems. I've driven many european passes with a unit and thoroughly enjoyed them but there's always a bit of value doing a bit of homework. Many thanks.

It’s not an easy route with a caravan, there are some very tight hairpin bends and steep climbs and decents. Is there a particular reason for travelling this route other than the scenery?
If you’re using it to get to Cortina and either the north Adriatic coast or Croatia then the route via the Brenner Pass then the SS49/SS51 to Dobiaco is far easier and quicker.
However, if you want to view the route and the area, the scenery is spectacular and providing you caravan is not too long and your tow car well matched you will get through although it wiil be a slow journey.

If you saw some panting cyclist, that would probably have been my son-in-law. He's just got back from a long weekend doing these hill climbs in the Dolomites. I worry for my grandsons that lunacy may be hereditary.

Many thanks Dave. This basically confirms what I thought. We've driven some pretty hairy passes in Switzerland (the Furka and Oberalp come to mind) plus the Grossglockner in Austria, which we'll be doing again, so the Great Dolomite Road seems to fall into the same catagory. We'll look forward to it and allow plenty of time to drive and enjoy the scenery.

A 6 metre motorhome will be fine. We did it about 8 years ago when we had an Adria Twin. There are lots of parking places on the tops for viewing the scenery and many motorhomers spend the night in them. It would be a tedious journey with a caravan though.
