ITX-Portsmouth Pays
Hi,
There have been several threads re the savings achieved by using the ITX, ferry and site/vouchers, scheme.
I have posted that the Plymouth to Roscoff route has some great deals and, as it is only 35 miles away, for us is ideal. I booked my ITX crossing and vouchers trip this week and the price is very good and, as seems usual, shows a massive saving over booking direct with BF of £462.60.
The reason for the post is that after booking I was chatting to a friend who is considering using BF and looked at prices for other BF routes.
Our Plym-Rosc price with 4 vouchers was £355.20 but on the same dates Ports-Caen is £285.80 making the ferry £198.
Ports-le Havre is £241.20 making the ferry cost £153.40.

Timing is everything.
For one particilar day in May the car/ Caravan/ two adults single fare from Portsmouth to Caen is £120 at 1445 ...or £235 at 0815....or £350 on the overnight sailing.
All on that one same day.

Arrival is 2030 Uk time which is 2130 French time. - there is a choice of campsites close to the ferryport which remain open for visitors arriving on that sailing.

Just in case, after seeing BB and Eurors posts, the price was for a return. As said timing is key-were we go sail Friday morning it would be £150 more.

Last year I did the 14:45 to Caen at the beginning of June returning on the early afternoon sailing three weeks later and a 6M MH cost a whisker under £400, and that was through the club.

It's all down to personal preference of course (and available cash!). We used to use the caravans go free crossing with camping cheques and stay at Les Pommiers (which unlike others here, we preferred before it changed hands). But now have reverted to what we did in the old days of getting overnight crossings both ways with a 4 berth cabin. It effectively adds a day onto the beginning of the trip as the whole day isn't taken up driving down to Portsmouth, and a similar amount on return. And the 7 am depart on return wasn't much fun either.
It's lovely to be out on the road in France in the early morning without having to strike camp.
It is probably at least £300 more expensive but as we always stick to municipal campsites and the like we don't spend a lot when away.

In days of yore, I did the overnighters but never slept particularly well. Living only 10-15 minutes from the ferry does however give me all the options.

We prefer the overnight ferries not only because we live in Scotland so if its Hull we arrive there the same day we leave home, get on ferry, arrive next morning in Belgium after a good nights sleep.
If its Portsmouth or Plymouth, then we have 1 overnight stop on the way down and get on the ferry, arrive next morning in France.
OH hates day ferries over a few hours in length, he just wants to be on his way rather than sitting about on a ferry, so the night crossings work for us.
Looking at Plymouth to Roscoff for September then Bilbao/Santander home in November. Will need to phone club though as the November dates are not yet available online.
Wish I only lived 35 miles from Plymouth, (used to live there 46 years ago) I would use that crossing all the time.

We often pinch ourselves that as well as making great savings, and travelling on our favourite ferry, we also get to do it in a leisurely fashion with no getting up at silly o’clock or travelling hundreds of miles to get to the port with the associated stress that brings.
The Pont Aven crossing also leaves at 2030 so not too late to eat once on board in the excellent restaurant which is a great way to start the holiday.
Arriving in Roscoff at 0800 means a full day available for travel as opposed to the arrivals late in the day and a hurried set up.
For people travelling from further afield the timings are good, the journey will be a lot more pleasant than fighting your way to Dover and Plymouth has good parking available in the ferry lanes if needs be with a very good bar/restaurant alongside.
