Cheap Plymouth / Roscoff available

I'm a little surprised that ferry operators aren't wooing MH owners with better discounts as they would obviously be able to get more of them on their ferries than caravans for any given price package. Is it because caravans perhaps have more passengers with a consequent increase in the number of passengers paid for plus increased on-board sales?

don't know the answer, CY but most of the car/caravans we see on the ferry have only two occupants, so I think they would make more by being able to take (say) perhaps 50% MHs.
however, despite the rising number of MHs, there are still very many caravans who wish to travel.
but as Phil suggests, a pricing system that really does charge by the metre would be a fairer one.
still, who's to know why the offers that are available are available?

yet in some ways they do charge by the metre or should I say half metre. When you enter your length the price goes up for every half metre or at least it does for MH's

Out of curiosity and not wanting to accused of getting my facts wrong I've just checked.
Plymouth to Roscoff sailing 5/9/19 rtn 6/10/19
6m MH = £370
6.5 and 7m MH = £406
7.5m and 8m MH = £442
taking the same lengths as above of caravan + car it matters not what the size of the caravan is the price is £295 (because as has been pointed out caravans go free)
So an 8m caravan + 4.5m car is £295 while a 8m MH is £442 that's a difference of £147

Quite a difference, isn't it TG? Like others who have posted on this thread, and other threads previously, I cannot understand why there appears to be this discrimination between discounts for caravans and MHs.
In answer to another post, no, I don't "want a certain answer and despite others offering information and advice just keep repeating the same question when they don’t get that answer".
It's down to the fact that there is a much better discount for car+caravan than for a MH, and for a "club" which calls itself the Caravan and Motorhome Club (changed to include the "and Motorhome" bit only recently), that seems almost a mockery.

so a simple question, is there a price difference between MH and caravans if you booked without the club? Never mind the club discount? If so then you cannot blame the club I would have thought?
Or are people wanting the club to reverse the discount to make the prices equal? Perhaps that would make MH people happy?

fair point, swings and roundabouts, gain on the cheaper fares, lose out on the aires and pay more for stops?

Yes there is a difference, MH's are slightly cheaper than a car and caravan on most crossings.

I'm not sure it's anything to do with the club but, notwithstanding TG's comment, I can't understand why the ferry companies don't price nearer to the space consumed.

and neither has the prices and conditions set by the ferry companies, the only thing the club does is get a discount for it's members.

Like TG I have done a comparison this morning of the prices.
I have looked at the price direct with BF, a ferry only price with the club and an ITX price with the minimum 4 vouchers costing £88. I have priced a return Plymouth to Roscoff overnight out on a Thursday in June and return Sunday morning in July both on the Pont Aven. I have looked at the price for a car+7.5 m caravan and for a 7.5 m MH
The prices with the club include a cabin but those with BF don’t.
The direct prices are:£675 and £865
The club prices are;£425 and £559
The ITX prices are:£355 and £553
That means the ferry portion of the ITX is; £267 and £465.
So an ITX saves , including the vouchers, £398 for a caravan and £400 for a MH on the direct BF price.
The direct prices and the ITX prices are a difference of £198 and the club ferry only is a difference of £134.
I don’t know how the MH price compares with other routes but the car/van price is very good.

they do indeed....certainly when booking a MH the cost rises in line with van length...
my post was in support of your observation that caravans twice the length of a MH can seemingly travel for less...
if they charge by the metre (or half metre) let's just have a single 'formula' for all...
ill bet many caravanners would be shocked to see how much their 12m outfit would cost if it were a MH...

David, how about a 'MH go free' offer.....I bet the deck would be packed then

I think we can agree that the ITX fares are a good deal, I know we have benefited from them in the past and we are about to do so again in a few weeks time with our car + caravan.
Anyone who has actually used a "caravan goes free" crossing will have seen exactly why the companies do it,entire decks filled with caravans most of which would not be there otherwise
Agreed but if there was an incentive for MH's then they too could fill the decks and 2 MH's for each caravan outfit
Just about every crossing I've checked over the last few years having had both types of LV the caravan does get a better deal with the club's.
Yet when booking direct the MH does usually come out slightly cheaper, however it is usually still higher than the club's price even without an ITX fare.
I do still think though that the club could try harder

I don’t know how the MH price compares with other routes but the car/van price is very good.
Just done a quick comparison on the Hull - Zeebrugge route going out midweek May return midweek June.
Direct with P&O a car + 6.5m caravan £687.25 ......... 6.5m MH £415
C&MC Car + 6.5m caravan £602.62 .............. 6.5m MH £409
on this route a caravan is best to go on Sat/Sun as they can usually get an ITX fare if buying 4 vouchers.
There is no doubt that a lot of research has to be done if trying to get the 'best' fare.

that's life and so what? You are saying they should? Why? There are offers on for Volvo cars atm so the same should be offered for Ford... whatever?

sorry confused, you posted:

The price I quoted above was for a non ITX crossing.
If you take just a normal crossing then MH's do fair better. However when there is an ITX offer then caravans do better by far.
What I was trying to show was that the caravan is HEAVILY discounted when an ITX fare is offered compared to a MH.
Someone asked up thread (can't remember who) how do MH's fair compared to caravans when booking direct or when no ITX is on offer.

When you talk about and offer to members then yes I would expect the offer to be equal.
We are ALL members at the end of the day irrespective what LV you choose to have.
Didn't know Volvo had an offer on but we got a great deal on our Ford

"When you talk about and offer to members then yes I would expect the offer to be equal."
So would I, TG, if the offer was being made by the club but when they are passing on a third party's discount it’s a little different.
I suppose, to be totally fair, the club could refuse to act as agents for the ferry companies and not offer its membership anything at all.
1 -
I dare say they could.
When we lived in Germany I worked for a travel agent for the Armed Forces, the ferries offered discounts to the forces through the agent.
The offers were available to all at the same rate, didn't matter if you were Army or RAF, didn't matter if you were a Cpl or WOI or even a General the discount was the same.
I suppose the club could offer a % as a discount, available to all irrespective of what LV you own.
Have we yet established that the offer is from the Ferry company

Who else is going to discount the fares other than the seller of those ferry places? The club won't foot the bill for the discount in the same way as your Armed Forces travel agent didn’t.
