Wifi Price rise

CAMC have put up the cost of wifi on its sites by 10% on the annual charge to £27.50. Have I missed something as there doesn’t appear to be anything in the way of explanation on the website or magazine?. Are they hoping that no-one will notice?

I was aware of it a while ago. I seem to think that it had been priced at £25 wor a while.

I think I am on my fourth annual pass and they have all been £25. So in the scheme of things probably due for an increase. Plus in the last year / 18 months the quality / speed of the service at many  sites has improved significantly. It equates to about 2.5% per annum. I am OK with that.

Slightly ironic that as the CMC put their prices up the C&CC decide to offer WiFi for free! I do think the Club should offer WiFi for £1 a day. As someone who uses his mobile data now, where possible, the daily and weekly rate seem quite expensive compared to the annual pass.

My deal is £12 for 12gb of data so no reason to purchase the clubs WiFi

The weekly site wifi charge is very much what we would pay on a commercial site. It is the one day rate which is too high. Also the fact that it only allows one user.

On commercial sites it is common to pay £10 for a week or £5 for 3 days but had always allowed two users. We generally move every 5 nights so on a commercial site usually by 2 x 3 days as we can check out how useful it is before the second purchase. On a club site we just by one 12 month annual pass. I use it more than OH as since losing sight in one eye I no longer read books as I find it irritating because I can't scan the pages the same. If we are both using wifi one uses the mifi. If there is no CC on site we both use mifi.

Before the £25 annual prescription we would not have entertained CC wifi as it was £40 for 100 hours which had to be used in 6 months! At that time I still had normal sight and enjoyed reading but even so that would have lasted us about 4 weeks I suppose.

What I find strange is that all the major providers of internet connections are dropping their prices as they compete for business and presumably, the cost of the hardware is falling as well - so why does this Club find it necessary to increase its prices at all?

I get a massive data boost from EE from having both our phones and broadband with them, so I will continue to tether all of our devices to my phone when I require an internet connection.

I only ever used the CCC wifi once or twice years back.

Never used CCC wifi. The CC wifi I have and find that, for us it works fine generally. For our usage as we buy just the one annual voucher it works out at 40p a day for the number of CC sites that we use.

Not sure why you would want to include it into site fees when you say you prefer to use your sim cards as site wifi is rubbish?

Not sure I would ever pay the one day rate other than in a dire emergency surprised

Some of us have no need for a smartphone though. We have little need for a mobile phone in truth for much of the time although we both carry a small clam type mobile. We are at home for 8 months of the year and during that time the phones are rarely used as we prefer to use one of our 5 home phones much of the time with their included calls.

For us paying 8p per minute is far cheaper than having a £5 monthly contract each. The only time OH is likely to use her mobile to make a call is when she wants to contact me if we are out in a town area doing our own thing and wish to meet for coffee and do some together things. I doubt that she spends more than £1 a year but let's say £2 at most!

My phone receives far more incoming calls than I ever make outgoing. Last year during holidays I made a 10 minute call to eldest daughter as she was having problems, probably a 3 min call to my garage, a 2 minute call to a local dentist, a few minutes to greenflag, a handful of 'where are you calls' and one 'I am stuck on the motorway' call. Including calls less than £5 a year.

So our mobile phone charges no more than £10 a year. We paid £25 for CC site wifi, about £25 for commercial wifi and £50 for 24gb of EE data sim for our mifi.

I think we have only ever used CC wi-fi once, and that was a long long time ago. We have a big enough 4G allowance already, which meets our internet needs and can be used all year round anywhere in the UK ( and EU ) that has a signal. It would not surprise me as time goes by, fewer and fewer people choose to pay for site wi-fi as the number of smart phones on sites increases. If the club continue to charge for it, the annual charge is therefore bound to increase in price year on year. An annual pass of course, which can only be used on club sites, is less appealing for those who don't stay on club sites for enough nights to justify the charge.

I didn't say i would want to include it into site fees. I have no need for wifi on site and it wouldn't bother me if none was provided thereby saving the club money.

I have no need for several things on site. However, I would not want to see them done away with. Plus of couse those using it are paying an extra fee for the privelidge, which must go some way towards funding it.

DD, I think there must be a mistake in this calculation somewhere, I thought it wasn't right when I read it.

I assume JVB means £27.50 for a 1 year subscription to CAMC's WiFi.  He then goes on to say it works out at 4p a day, calculated for the amount of days he spends on CAMC sites.

BUT, AFAIK there are only 365 days in any one year, 4p per day charge works out at £14.60 per year, not £27.50 surprised

    Ina

I was also puzzled by JVB's calculation. I know he spends a lot of days in any one year on Club sites but I couldn't work it out as he has done. Fair enough for someone in his position the annual fee is very good value, even at the increased cost. Where it is not such good value is when you need it for short term use like the odd day or odd days within a week.

Strange indeed in this day and age where we can both sit in armchairs in many high street coffee shops and both use free wifi for the price of a coffee.

We have long given up site wifi, the experiences even without considering cost were just to tedious, nowadays the mobile reigns.

free wifi for the price of a coffee.

So, not free but included. I imagine it is far cheaper to service a coffee shop with wifi than a CC site though.

The daily rate of £3 is ridiculous David. I have paid at least that about 3 years ago on a commercial site when I needed to establish e-mail contact for a day with a friend who's husband was very ill.

Many of the comments have referred to the free wifi that is available in bars, restaurants, supermarkets etc but it also free on many of the European sites.

What has intrigued me in this discussion is that some of the comments seem to have come straight from the CAMC Propaganda manual?!

Where does one get access to this manual.😂

Usually hot spots though, unless you are close enough to reception for it to reach your van. Most of the CC's paid for WiFi is site wide. The only place we have had this abroad there was a significant charge.

It is free on no campsite Mikey. It is either provided included in the site charges or as an extra to be paid for. Some typical UK sites are 'free' in that it is included in pitch fees but many are not.

I don't use site hotspots generally. If I want access to the internet it will be in caravan or occasionally in car.

What propaganda manual and what has ‘free’ (which it isn’t) Wi-fi in Europe got to do with the price this club charges?

With 4g mobile offering a good data service and 5g now being rolled out I think the C&CC have seen the writing on the wall. By offering a free service it can be as poor as they like and there will be no pressure to spend club money to upgrade unlike the C&MC's current offering.
