Spain - 4* & 5* sites
having enjoyed a few of the 4*/5* French Camping-Castels sites, as we’re off to Spain with the caravan for the first time in mid-May for 6 weeks, just wondered if there are any similar groups of sites in Spain. We us Archie’s and ACSI so not short of options, but being able to narrow things down if in right place is helpful.
any suggestions of groups, or indeed individual sites, most welcome. We are going ferry into Bilbao, and then heading south to Med coast, but exactly where and how long is a “make it up as we go “ basis. So very flexible, and we have not booked any sites in advance.

Out of interest I just typed Luxury Camping in Spain to see what came up. Are they the sort of sites you are looking for?

Hi Ian, we always have a destination/s in mind which we then look at on Google maps, type in the word ‘camping’ in the search box and see what comes up, as the start point.
Street View then helps narrow things down then it’s finalised after looking at reviews etc and what appeals to us and our travel companions.
We have also made use of YouTube and Camping Streetview to help once we have a site in mind.

There is not a group in Spain like the Castels group in France, there are smaller groups like the Marjal group (ACSI) in the Alicante area who only have two sites close to where we live but these two along with the one in La Marina Camping international are what you looking for and although I don't tend to use them (too close) they are of top quality. The other group I can think of is the Kiko Park group (ACSI) which has one site on the coast near Valencia and one in a rural setting but both of good quality.
The campsites in Spain are usually of a good standard and there is no need to book at that time of year and maybe they will fill up a bit at the weekend but are never full unlike the winter months.
May/June weather wise is best time to tour Spain and the Brits have all gone home.

I've been going to southern Spain for 25 years mainly leaving UK in October and returning at the end of February. I like to spend a couple of weeks travelling from Bilbao or Santander down to Costa del Sol and also like to choose a different route each time. I've written a blog about those routes, where I've stayed and what I've seen.

good post Phil, we've just returned this Sunday night and wanted to try Kiko Park as we were passing that way (on the return trip) and had seen many good reviews...
well. we had a week there and really liked it....the pitches are probably the neatest ones we've come across, not a chipping out of place, the site roads are all block paved and very classy (if a road can be classy...) with loads of room on the pitch. it has two toilet blocks (that we tried) both clean but one had been refurbed to a very high std and the second was awaiting the same upgrade.
the site is 20m from the fabulous beach and a gentle stroll into the closest ''urbanisation' with plenty of bars/restaurants. it has a harbour on the doorstep and lovely cycle rides through the orange groves to Gandia (and it's lovely port) which has the cleanest, widest beach you could hope for.
yes, this has moved up to the top of the 'return to' list.
the Marjal sites are a bit chalk and cheese...the inland one, while top notch, we felt was too far from the beach (for us) and a bit remote generally.
OTOH, the Marjal Costa Blanca site is equally well equipped, very clean and has really good pitches, however there is a canal that seperates it from the nearby port which means a long detour as there is no convenient crossing...bikes make this easier but it's a bit of a faff, and even with a car, seems a bit unnecessary just for a couple of miles.....
a young entrepreneur with a small ferry boat perhaps?

We went to Tamerit last year and had a super pitch . Lovely site with shaded pitches or open pitches . Toilet blocks fantastic and cleaned 3 times a day . Access to Barcelona via train from local town - and campsite located close to coastal motorway, so easy access .discounts available for longer stays on their website . Super sandy beach adjacent to the site but sea can be rough in places so you ll need to choose your spot a little further along the beach. We loved it.....

as a matter of interest, do people generally not book ahead in Spain during May/June, much as is the case in France? I ask because having looked at Tamartit, it seems many of the premium pitches are unavailable during several dates in those months.

I thinkyou mean Marjal Guardamar BB. Marjal Costa Blanca is the inland one.

I'm not sure how early you need to book for Tamerit to get a super pitch. I did book in February for a June 21 day booking. Although the site was very busy, there did seem to be other pitches available on the site that weren't super pitches but still quite large. We asked for a non shaded pitch and this was a mistake because even in June, the temperatures were still mid thirties plus and they didn't drop very much at night, so it was quite stifling until we got used to it.
The site itself was big but fantastic. It has a good supermarket, pizza take away and three restaurants. There is a lovely beach bar under the trees that is lit up by night with large cushions, chairs and hammocks and there is free nightly entertainment in high season which was of a high standard (in my opinion)
Swimming pool complex was superb and well maintained.
