CL Photos
Hiya folks.
It’s quite noticeable that many CL’s don’t include photos. I realise that some folks aren’t bothered, fair enough, but I like to have some idea what what it’s like when browsing through prospective sites. Is there some reason why so many don’t include photos?

Not that I know of Freddy. I'm like you, prefer to see what I'm turning up at and if there are 2 competing CLs for my business and one has photos then that will decide things for me. Mind you, it might decide things towards the other non photo CL!

Posting photos on this website isn’t always easy, and if you do write a review for a site, there is no facility for reviewers to add photos!
If you want to take a look at the lie of the land prior to choosing a CL, then Google Earth does help, as does an OS map of some sort to see if their are any disturbances likely to interfere with a quiet stay.
There are a few more CLs adding photos, but again, they are only a snapshot in time, and things can and do change. Good to see photos, good to read reviews.

You are jumping to the conclusion that every CL owner uses emails Freddy. Some lovely CLs have been open for a very long time, and the elderly owners may not be interested in setting up websites and all that palaver!😁

Freddy, Rowena has said that HO will put photos on the respective pages if the owners would send them in. Not sure of the format required though. It's just a pity that those of us that use CL's on regular basis are not able to submit pictures of the sites we visit for inclusion, or that the CL inspectors don't do it.

Would be very good if reviewers could add photos, does make reviews much more interesting and helpful.

CL Owners are encouraged by the Club to submit photographs and the CAMC Head Office CL Department is very helpful in terms of adjusting file formats and image sizes if CL Owners are having technical problems, but the fact remains that many CL Owners simply don't submit photographs and are not obliged to do so.
CLs vary considerably and it is worth thinking back to the original CL concept - CLs were created under a 1960 Act of Parliament to make it easier for land-owners to use spare pieces of land without going through a lengthy and costly Planning Permission process.
That Act of Parliament was created in the days when no-frills 'farm field' sites were prevalent, and some CLs still operate in an old-fashioned 'we are here if you want us' manner, rather than actively promoting themselves. For some Club members, this might be the delightful 'back to nature' caravanning that they seek.
Just like Club members can choose where to book, CL Owners can choose how (or how not) to advertise their CLs.
We then have the question of whether a guest or a member of Club staff can take a photo of the CL and put it on the Club website. Here you should bear in mind that the CL is private property and a landowner could reasonably object to someone coming onto their property and taking photos, particularly if they feel that this threatens their security. Would you like it if someone did it to you?
As CL Owners ourselves, we are happy to display photos and videos, but that is a matter of our own personal choice.

I agree with OP and others regarding photos of CLs and I personally would not book one without seeing images and good reviews.
I run an Off-Grid CL (non-ehu) of which there are currently 407 on the Clubs CL search. Visitors staying with us have said they also would not book a CL without images (as they had have surprises in the past!).I agree with Ian Kelly that CLs do vary considerably but diversity is a good thing as not all members are looking for the same thing.

Hi All,
Thank you all for your comments, we are always encouraging CL owners to provide photographs of their sites. Some owners do not want to provide them or as mentioned in other posts they do not have internet or email.
Our CL Advisors who visit the sites each year will try to encourage and support the CL Owner by explaining the benefits of a photograph and offering to take the photograph on the owners behalf.
All new CL sites are required to provide a photograph before they are even published on our website.
Thanks
Maddie

Except that's not happening! I've just done a quick check back on the monthly open list to August 2018 and found 5 new CLs opened and listed since then without even one photo, just the standard 'awaiting image from CL'. It's not supporting new CLs when they're published on the website without photos....they're perhaps going to have a tough start and maybe think it's not worth it as a consequence. All bar one of those 5 still have no reviews and some have been open since August 2018 which says to me that they've maybe not had many visitors...
If we want the CL network to prosper and grow we need the Club to support new ones by insisting they have a photo on their listing (the sites officer who gives final approval could take one) and it should be a flattering photo too....one I saw recently would definitely not encourage me to visit!

Just out of interest, I know new CL owners have to join the Club, and that of course is £50 before you start putting together your CL. However, we use a lot of the long established CLs, some over 40 years with the Club, and many of these are not Club members. Does this have any implications in terms of the Club posting photos?

Yes, in recent years new CL owners coming on board have to be members of the CAMC which I personally believe is only right.
Non-member CL owners are allowed just one photo on the CAMC website.Member CL owners are allowed up to eight photos on their listing. So more than worth the membership fee, especially with all the discounts to be had.
All photos are uploaded in the same way once emailed to the correct department at Head Office. They will do any re-sizing needed.Nicola

Totally agree, but I fear the club would not be best pleased with some of the photographs submitted !
