Had a good walk out to St Mary's Lighthouse, Old Hartley this morning, doing some seal and bird spotting but no camera with me to take close ups. Good view from my phone camera which  just about held steady in the strong winds.

Not really wildlife, but we came across a surprise grave today. I am sure those from Yorkshire will recall Richard Whitely who used to present Look North. He later became the host on Countdown with the lovely Carol Vordeman. He is buried in the church yard of St John’s at East Witton, a rather pretty spot full of daffodils and snowdrops.

Following on from see the Roe deer the other day we then saw a herd of well over 100, including quite a few white ones, grazing on a wheat field outside the village of Therfield two days ago.

We too have just seen our first Cowslips today at Greetham.

Quite  agree  OP,  but  will / can  you  please  tell  the  Wildlife  how  they  ought  to  behave.  Darned  birds keep  seeing  a  'must  have'  seed  or  bug  a  micro-second  before  the  shutter  clicks  yell

Saw our first Bluebells in the woods beside Rutland Water today, as well as more Cowslips and Primroses. On the reservoir there were lots of water birds, mainly Swans and Tufted Ducks, also a pair of Gadwell. Overhead were Buzzards ans Red Kites, but didn't see the Ospreys.

And  as  far  as  I  can  tell  there's  not  a  lot  happening  at  Loch  Garten  either,  Nellie.  We  "lost"  Odin  the  male  in  2017  and  there  were  but  a  couple  of  young  "Snowflake"  males  last  year  which  were  inadequate  mates  for  the   elderly  female  EJ.  We  can  but  hope  she  will  be  back  --  well  she  is  21  or  so  now  and  Tempus  is  Fugiting  --  very  few  manage  to  get  to  the  great  age  of  the  famous  "Lady"  at  Loch  of  the  Lowes  never  mind  retain  a  nest  successfully  smile

We'll be calling in at the centre there in about 6 weeks time. Hope that EJ has a new mate and will be on the nest. Will have to look at the web camera before we go. However there may be a new queen of the nest by then.

Don't  forget  to  get  a  picture  of  the  peanut  feeder  Nellie.

It  always  makes  me  smile  --  just  a  standard  feeder  is  about  all  one  can  see  on  the  web  cam.  It's  only  when  you  see  it  in  the  "plastic"  so  to  speak  that  you  realise  there  is  a  3 or  more  metre  length  of  down  spout  fixed  to  the  top  to  give  a  fortnights  supply  of  nuts  surprised.

Did see an Osprey today, not at the Res, but flying over the woods at the edge of Exton Estate.....so they are about.

Just read the blog from "Rutland Ospreys" and it would appear that there are already 15 in the area, including the web cam resident pair Maya & 33.

Cuckoo arrived here yesterday in our field in the Lot and sounded strange a first but by end of day a normal call also the warblers have arrived.  Only seen 1 swallow so far and two house martins will look for crag martins in the next few days.  Off to the Brenne region next week for a few days so will look to see what is about.

I was wondering if we'd hear a cuckoo this year, they have been dwindling from our part of the SW but at least they're on their way then! And the swallows, as usual I'm looking forward to see the first ones return to a neighbour's barn.

How widespread in the UK is the orange tip butterfly?

Saw one yesterday, but had never seen one before in the south east.

Called in at Newport Wetland Reserve this morning. Had a pleasant time, seeing hundreds of Sand Martin and a Little Owl. Looks like an interesting place to spend an hour or so. Good expanse of Reed. The Welsh Coastal Path runs around the perimeter so good for dog walkers. You can  make a decent walk along the coast.

There is only the 1 hide on the reserve.

If you time it right, you can see plenty of waders on the mud flats. Need a high tide though.

If you are still in the area WN, it might be worth a visit to Goldcliff. Just a few miles from the wetlands and should have a decent amount to see.

Yesterday,8am,I saw a heron in the field behind our house and on investigation it had cleared 6 goldfish from the garden pond (I took the net off at the weekend to allow the marsh marigolds to flower properly). To day I bought some more fish and released them into the pond at 5pm.At 6.15 pm the heron landed on the garden wall overlooking the pond!!!!fortunately the new fish had gone deep and the heron soon left!!now re.netted the pond!!!We have only had 3 visits in 2 years and 2 of those were in the last 48 hours!!!!!Do herons have a 6th sense????
