How can people be so stupid?
Photo from today's paper. Totally unbelievable. According to the text, some of the figures are young children, posing on the rock fall under the cliff, whilst the adults took photos.

Steve. It's an ongoing local battle to keep people away from the cliffs, the problem extends from West Bay to Hive Beach in Burton Bradstock. The beach walk when the tide is low is very tempting but you need to be a long way out to avoid rock falls. The same on the cliff tops where the NT has to keep moving the footpath signage.
My photos shows Hive Beach where there has sadly been loss of life under a cliff collapse.
In summer people sunbathe under the cliffs, it's hard to believe but they appear to ignore all the warning signs and notices.
These are very dangerous cliffs to be admired from a distance and care needs to be taken in the water too. The beach shelves steeply near the cliffs with strong undercurrents. So it's an area to treat with respect.

My thoughts entirely I’m sad to say. The never ending urge to get that one special photo, to be famous for doing something stupid or drive to be a Zed level celebrity, is certainly becoming an all too easy way to die. It’s the ones left to clean up after that I feel sorry for, especially if they are put into danger.

There is a Darwin award each year for the most stupid way of getting yourself killed. This looks like a good contender, if only....
A few years ago we were walking along the cliff path between Saundersfoot and Tenby. An elderly lady and her daughter were coming the other way and before anyone could say anything the elderly lady stepped back and fell off the cliff. Horrified, I looked over the edge of the 200' drop. 10 feet below me and stuck in an outward growing Gorse bush was the woman. Before I could even think straight I scrambled down. She was shocked and cut as I was. Somehow I managed to push her to a position where Mrs WN and the womans daughter, who were lying on their stomachs, could reach over and grab both of her hands and pull her up. I, very gingerly and carefully, found my own way back up. Both women were extremely shaken but apart from some cuts the elderly lady was unhurt. She thanked me, then proceeded to step back again to let me pass!!! Fortunately I was close enough to grab her coat and haul her away from the edge.
My reward? A real ticking off from Mrs WN for going over the cliff edge to help her. She was right. I should have just phoned for professional help. So I was stupid as well but hopefully in a different kind of way. I still get the wobbles thinking about now.

Well I think you should have got a medal for that, seriously - you thought of just helping and never mind the risk to yourself, well done Sir!
btw the Darwin award is for taking oneself out out of the gene pool, not necessarily by getting killed. I think my visits to an AS and possible visit to a CL could well qualify me for an award?

I don't want to dwell on it but the rock fall incident at Hive Beach killed a 22 year old female, her two male companions were rescued from the tons of rubble by some quick thinking and brave bystanders.
So as the holiday season approaches it's a timely warning for anyone enjoying coastal walks in the uk.

How can people be so stupid? Oh, very easily!! That wouldn’t be the cliffs at West Bay on the Chesil would it? If it is, it is even more senseless as a 3 year old was killed there 3 or 4 years ago and an adult lady 2 years ago. Signs tell people not to sit near the cliffs and every time I go, there they are sitting under the cliffs.!
