Sites near Santander

We are sailing from Plymouth to Santander at the end of April arriving early afternoon. Our intentions are to spend a few days in Spain then spend a leisurely month up through Western France departing from Caen. Whilst fairly familiar with the French part of the trip we would appreciate any suggestions regarding campsites along the north coast of Spain especially one for our first couple of nights within approx. 2 hours from Santander. Thanks in advance.

We like this site Caravaning Oyambre www.oyambre.com/en/. 15 minute walk to beach. About 36 miles from ferry takes about 60 mins. An easy drive after the crossing. Last stayed there September 2017. Think its now in club overseas but we used ACSI camping card (current price 20 euros).

I would suggest that northern Spain is deserving of more than your "few days". If you are willing to go a little way inland a recommended site is El Molino de Cabuerniga - about an hour from Santander ferryport.

Just outside Santander is Camping Cabo Mayor. Its about 10 minutes drive from the docks. It is a reasonable site ideal for seeing Santander and just up the road is a small restaurant at the lighthouse, does very good tapas. The bus into Santander is a 10 minute walk away. We always use it when arriving or departing at Santander.

yup second this, was there last year, now got 2 pools, indoor/outdoor, great toilet block, pitches on terraces great but hard to book as nearly always full, lower pitches are ok and nicely shaded if hot, good bar/restaurant, shop a bit basic but supermarket close by.

We stayed at Oyambre on our first trip to N Spain in 2016. Agree its a lovely site. Its about a 20 min walk to the beach, which you can't see from the site. It looks out towards the Picos. St Vincente de B is a nice town too.

The next time, in 2017 we stayed closer to Santander at Playa Joyel. Its another one in the club guide. It was some way down a residential road with many speed bumps, no fun with a caravan, and the area around it in late April was pretty shut up and  deserted. The site is big and organised, good loo blocks but not all open, so quite a hike! It was fairly busy with quite small pitches, not very well defined compared with most French sites. It was, though, right next to a beautiful beach.

Oyambre for us too.  We stayed there for a few nights on the way home 3 years ago.  Same last year and we'll be there again in September.

Thanks to all that replied, Oyambre looks good but going in the wrong direction, Eurotraveller, agree the area deserves more than a few days but have prior engagements in SW France but Cabo Mayor could fit the bill. Thanks again.

AFAIK Camping Oyambre isn't open during the winter months.   That is when I travel, so I use Camping Virgen del Mar which is only about six miles from the ferry.   http://campingvirgendelmar.com/en/

I stayed there for three nights a couple of weeks ago.   There's a lot of interesting places to visit within 30 miles or so.   To see - scroll down to the end of my blog

Sorry but I have to disagree about Caravaning Oyambre.

We found the pitches very small and very close together. The site was full when we were there (2016) and it was very noisy until late into the night (remember that the Spanish tend to eat very late).

The walk to the sea, and the beach when you got there, was, as others have said, very good.
