I use the autoroutes via Belgium, Germany and then cross Austria via the Fern and Brenner Passes. Last year I went to Croatia via the Dolomites. If you want a better idea of the route I used, click >here<.

I avoided the autoroutes through Austria because of the expense but for a caravan the cost is not very high and you will have to use their autoroutes instead because caravans are not allowed on the old Brenner Pass road.

because caravans are not allowed on the old Brenner Pass road.

Very true, I did not know that and in 2017 missed any sign telling me so, I wondered who the blue light car behind was chasing, I pulled over to allow it to pass, and he did but pulled in front of me and relieved me of €30.

    Nice fella thoughlaughing

Nervous passenger route to Italy is to go under the Alps instead of over them - you pay to cross Switzerland and use their St Gotthard tunnel, but it can be toll free to get to the Swiss border at Basel going from Calais via Lille and Luxembourg.

Calais, Metz (via the French motorways - quick, no traffic, good overnight stopover in Metz), then Germany via Strasbourg, Stuttgart, Ulm and Fern pass into Austria and stop overnight in Imst (Imst West).

Brenner pass into Italy then leave the Brenner autostrada for Dobbiaco and your in the Dolomites. No scary roads at all. To get to Garda drop down to Cortina then A27 to the A4 towards Milan. All easy routes and apart from the French motorways the tolls are reasonable.

In late June there should be no need to pre-book sites on route.

Fern Pass through Austria is straight forward (fill with fuel before border fuel in Italy is more expensive) You will need to buy a single vignette at 9.20e for ten days with an additional toll at Brennner Pass. Alternative is via Switzerland for which you need a vignette for car + caravan 40CHF each around £52 no further toll for St Gothard Tunnel, however St Gothard is a single tunnel which takes about 20+ mins to pass through with large trucks passing in the other direction.

Many sites to choose from at Lake Garda personally I am not keen on the southern shore have a look at sites between Malcesine and Bardolino, Camping Europa is a pleasant short walk along the lake promenade to Bardolino. Sites around Salo on the opposite shore are in a pleasant part of the lake. The western shore road north of Gardone Riveria  passes through many tunnels and is best avoided when towing.

The club uses a site at Sorico on Como but most of the touristy spots are further south, there are a number of sites in the ACSI book around Menaggio . Italian sites can be expensive especially in peak seasons the ACSI Book can help to reduce costs, the lakes as a whole can be busy in the peak periods which includes the latter part of May when the Germans have holidays again the ACSI Card availability dates give an indication .
