The lure of ehu

Just come off a Rally on an all singing and dancing commercial site.   They did a deal where the ehu was optional @£3 p/n.   28 vans 25 paid for ehu.  We didn’t refilled the gas bottle after we got back and it cost me £4.51, the bottle had been used for 4  nights on a clubsite so ehu and 3 nights non-ehu so 7 nights in total.

No moral to this story just numbers.

Well, OK,  maybe the club should offer a non EHU option for a £3 per night discount. Should please some! smile

We rarely, if ever, need EHU for our Motorhome and any reduction in price for those who don't need it on any commercial site would be very welcome.

Lots of non facility/ehu CL’s circa £5/night, the club would have to reduce their prices on non facilities sites significantly to compete.

Would be nice to have the choice but still on a decent pitch.

agreed, WTG, it would be great...but not be sent to some out of the way poor relation of a pitch but merely not to hook up....

I seem to remember when EHU was first brought in, many older vans didn't have it so you chose with or without electricity when booking in. The club's electricity bill would be reduced if they allowed members to survive without EHU, but of course the income would be proportionately less. I know we can survive without EHU for 3 nights ( in summer ) because we have done it even though at the moment we don't have solar. I would consider solar if opting out of EHU became a common possibility.

There is a difference between a pitch that has no hook up.  And one where hookup is available but not used as was the case for us this weekend.  Any reduction in price in that case can only be for the electricity not used.  The infrastructure is still their and has to be paid for and maintained.   If there is no infrastructure in the first place than obviously the pitch fee could be much reduced.

Obviously the positioning of non ehu pitches on a clubsite is a different question.   But as a caravaneer I know in then I know in the camc pecking order I come below Motorhomes, which come below glamping pods, which come below Airstreams.   I know my place!

At a £3 saving I would agree. However, if you can get the one pitch at Bladon Chains at a £9.90 saving at peak, perhaps not so unacceptable.🤔

To me it is recovering the infrastructure cost of fitting the refillable system that makes it unworkable. And the dragging the cylinder about to keep topping it up.

Actually, my fridge was cold (works better on gas) heating and water was warm. (Works better on gas 5kW vs 3kW) for less than 3 pounds.   I’m not begrudging the £3 p/n I just chose not to pay it.  But perhaps site fees should be based on the value of your outfit. Let’s say 0.1% of the value per night £50, 000 MH that will be £50 p/n £30,000 caravan £30 please Sir. I think you could be onto something.

We tend to do around 90 nights per year. 90 nights at £3 leccy per night is £270. In a year we use about £30 of gas...If we ran on gas, as we do some of the time anyway, as the gas is far far quicker than using electricity for heating and water, would we use an extra £240 worth in gas without the electric hook up ?  No way, the gas is quicker and much cheaper.  Any move towards metered electricity or having no electricity gets my approval.

Like many of us given the choice. It is called being frugal and that is how many of us could afford outfits in the first place.

I have come round to agreeing that making EHU optional would be an easy and effective way to satisfy the demands of some. But I'm pretty sure it would be a very small minority who would go without, given what I've seen on C&CC sites where that option is available.

Well the "opposition" are offering 30% discounts on non ehu in July (not all sites) so that brings the costs down to £10 a night on a site we'd like to visit. They're offering other discounts too. We've been in at reception on one C&CC site where we the only ones booked in for EHU and that included some larger outfits than ours. It made us re-think the possibilities. smile

The camping Club as far as I know, only offer non EHU grass pitches not non EHU H/S pitches. They are I think, primarily aimed at tents rather than 3.5 tonne motor-homes.

Some CC are on grass as well and seem left over as not worth including in EHU for whatever reason. Did see a number of motorhomes on grass last yeat on C&CC sites with and without EHU

Yes I agree, so have I, but I don't think I would want to book in advance any type of grass pitch months before a trip having no idea if the ground would be solid or muddy come the day. To be safe we always book a HS if we can, just like you do I believe, and that means EHU too at the moment.

Hakinbush you were way out in your over estimate of what some of us have paid for our motorhomes. I'm happy to pay an inclusive fee for the running of the site in my pitch fees but I'd like a choice on the EHU bit. Those of us who don't use every van appliance known to man are subsidising those that do.

Similar except I do it out of preference rather than safety as I prefer that alongside the caravan.

Not sure about the  every van appliance known to man Brue. We use heating when needed, hob, oven, kettle and lights. I suspect you use the same wink OK I admit we do use a toaster!

With a built-in LPG tank, gas is ridiculously cheap but I still like the convenience of EHU. It keeps the hot water ticking over and the fridge plus occasional use of the microwave, electric kettle and, most important (and difficult without EHU) a desk fan for hot nights in southern Europe.  a/c is becoming increasingly standard on motorhomes and that wouldn't be possible with just gas.
