Quiet Camp Site Wanted In South Of France

We have friends who live near Carcassone and are visiting them in early September. We want a few days on the Med before we see them and are looking for a quiet site somewhere in the Beziers/Narbonne area. We hate the huge sites with water parks, entertainment etc but would want a pool. This may be mission impossible but thought someone out there may be able to help. Thanks.

Not sure if this fits location wise but this is a fairly quiet campsite http://www.davidklyne.co.uk/camping_robinson.html  It does have a high fenced ball game area in the middle of the site which you might want to avoid! Its across the river from Marseillan Plage but its still walkable. We have stayed there a couple of times. Perhaps worth remembering that some European school holidays go into, at least, the first week of September so sites will still be full but from the second week of September onwards it gets a lot quieter.

Camping Figurotta at Bizanet - a few miles inland from Narbonne  - is one of our old favourite small, quiet,  rural sites -and it has a pleasant pool. I am told that the new owners have made considerable improvements from the site's previous rough and ready rustic condition. Lots of photos and recent reviews on PitchUp.com.  But it's a half hour drive to the sea at Gruissan or Narbonne  Plage - is that too far for you?

    Quick response thanks.

Thanks David, just had a look and the mention of a water park, lagoons, waterfalls and whirlpools etc fills me with dread. Looks god in your photos though so I’m not dismissing it.

Thanks Eurotraveller, I had already bookmarked that site for further consideration. And no, we don’t mind travelling to get to the sea. Cheers for the recommendation.

Thanks Another David, does look good but it may be a bit far south… but there again what’s another 50 or 60 miles ….nowt! Added to the possibles bookmarks.

Apologies, it was 2015 since we were last there and pool facilities have been built since then. Having looked at the site map they are set right in the corner of the site on what used to be their beach side pitches popular with motorhomes. (gravel base).

I would have a look at the caravan club sites Europe book and pick a town nearby and check if there is a municipal site there.

We have toured France for 6/7 years and only used sites in that book.

If you look carefully and check reviews online of the sites, you shouldn't go far wrong.

Most municipals are on the edge of towns and are quiet. They normally are close to Patisserie's!

In early September most sites (even the biggest all-singing ones) will be fairly quiet, so in actual fact you could go almost anywhere and it would be nothing like it appears on the website. In September you can use the ACSI card (www.campingcard.co.uk) and find sites with pools for as little as 12 euros per night, even in that area. (Camping Le Grillon, gets review scores of 8.5 out of 10)  Most of the clientele at that time of the year will be mature couples.  There may be the odd younger couple with toddlers, but not many, as all the schools have gone back.  There are sites with as few as 17 touring pitches, (Les Oliviers) and sites with a great many more  - but really something to suit (almost) everyone.

Have a look at the link above - and then the campsite websites, but please don't assume that the sites will be as busy as their websites show.  We have been the only people in the pool on many days in September at a variety of ACSI sites.

We have a house in the Aude and know that region very well - and there are other non-ACSI sites that I could recommend if you don't find anything on there!  Added later:  we also have a touring caravan which we store in the south, so we still use a lot of sites each summer.

Thanks ValDa, we use municipal campsites a lot - love the basic simplicity of them and not quite knowing what your getting till you get there (and the price being a Yorkshireman).

Les Oliviers has now been added to the short list (thanks) while Le Grillon is a little too far from the beach!

Cheers Tonker - we have the book, dating from 2015 now and it does get used. I was just wondering initially if anyone had a specific suggestion.

Problem with an out of date book - last year we arrived at a site near Limoges - open according to the book - but it had closed the day before for the season. there was a phone number taped to the office door which we rang and they told us of a local site that was open - a relief after a 200 mile drive!
