Location for Tapeworm treatment for dogs
Hi All,
Ignoring all the possible changes due to Brexit, I'm confused regarding the location for getting the tapeworm treatment for dogs done.
We intend taking our Mini Schnauzer with us to Bruges via Eurotunnel in September and whilst I think that I understand the requirements, the tapeworm visit to the overseas vet confuses me.
Can I visit a vet in Belgium or does it have to be in France where my departure to the UK port will be (Calais)? . Presumably, once in the EU, we will not require anything additional travelling between France/Belgium?
Thanks in advance for any help, plus any other dog travelling tips are always most welcome.

Belgian vets are fine. The thread at the top of this page - although headed List of vets in France - includes a map of vets in other countries, including Bruges in Belgium. There are no checks or requirements when you cross back from Belgium into France .

I've seen the useful map for vets, I was just concerned that if I get the treatment done in Belgium and then the UK authorities then say it should have been done in France?

cant remember of the top of my head, but i seem to recall that the tape worm pill has to be administered by a vet and the passport stamped somewhere in the region of within 5 days before travelling to the uk, also if we leave the EU without a deal you will also need a full health check to be performed by a vet, there are other posts on this forum with all the info.

We have had our dog seen by vets in Germany, Luxemburg Belgium and France. The dog must be seen within 24 Hrs of travel but it can be up to 5 days before you travel. The vet will give the dog a tablet for tapeworm.

Whatever the length of time, one day or one year, you are abroad you will need the Passport signing and dating by a Vet before being allowed back to the UK.
On your return to the UK the dog needs to have the Tapeworm treatment ( Echinococcus Treatment) administered by a Vet within a time scale of 24 hours and 120 hours (1 – 5 days) of your Train or Ferry arrival time in the UK.
The Pet Passport and the dogs medical requirements and Rabies treatment must be up to date.
The Vet will give a tablet for the 'Echinococcus Treatment' (Tapeworm) (pages 14-21 of the Pet Passport) and must stamp, sign and date correctly the relevant page.
You may be able to use your own tablet, make sure it is the correct dose for the size/weight of dog, but the Vet can insist on providing the tablet and refuse to use the one you provide.
The Vet should, but it is not obligatory, also examine the dog to ensure it is fit to travel and sign and date 'Clinical Examination' (page 28).
I think it's worth having the 'Clinical Examination' page signed just for peace of mind.
The five day window for having the Passport procedure means you can be almost anywhere in Europe and still get back to the Ports within the 120 hours allowed.
The further you are from the Tunnel/Ferries when you see the Vet it's usually cheaper – but not always!
Many Vets allow 'walk in' visits but booking an appointment is advised and remember most Vets shut between 1200 and 1400 each day and are shut on Sundays and Public Holidays.
At the Pet Passport Office you will need to have the Pet Passport, travel booking form and to know your vehicle registration number.
Also you should know the position of the Microchip on your animal (see page 3 of the Pet Passport) as you have to scan the animal to show the Microchip number corresponds to the one in the Pet Passport.
PLEASE NOTE - You MUST check that the Passport has been correctly signed and dated by the Vet for the Tapeworm treatment as it the responsibility of you, and only you, if it is not correct when presented at the Passport Office.
If the dog has not had the RABIES treatment, or is not up-to-date, the animal will not be allowed back to the UK for 21 days (three weeks) after having the Rabies treatment.
Any Pet Passport that appears to have been altered in any shape or form will almost certainly be rejected.
Whichever Vet you use I would appreciate it if you could give up-to-date information, especially price, to add to the Map.

Keith and Margaret have posted a most full reply and if my memory serves me well it's correct too , we went with our two mini dacshunds about 2 years ago and went all over Europe and kept to the procedure as they outlined . We found the vet's in Belgium value and accommodating and unlike some French vets they speak good English , unless you prefer to deal with the complexities of pet health in Flemish or French of course . It is wise to make appointments before hand though , we did that before we left for the 4 weeks away by contacting them by e mail and got good prompt replies in French initially but then in perfect English . We did the research of the vet's by Belgian yellow pages before we went then cross checked by visits to their web sites.
Having been over 3 times in the same year we found the experience quite simple in the end , but then we were not facing the imminent brexit conundrum which seems to be getting everyone's knickers in a twist . However I guess you will be trying to get back into the UK so it's our rules of re-entry that apply ......getting out might be subject to the scratching of officials heads maybe .
In the end the borders are man made constructs and life will go on , maybe with a little delay and frustration , but should we give in and stop at home , I guess not . Humans have been moving about with their dogs and other animals for thousands of years , and the only barriers are made by ourselves.......probably for good reasons but it has never stopped us ...

If you are staying at any of the sites close to the channel ports in France before coming home, just email or telephone the site, almost all have their favourite vet and will even book you an appointment, might be a little bit more expensive but saves a lot of hassle.

How regular do they check this? Has anybody fallen foul after not having tapeworm treatment?
