I think trying not to be rude, has this thread highlighted the generation gap?
Michelle and myself (Darren, hello) are very young 50 somethings, the smart phone, I wouldn't use the cliche right arm, but the list of its uses we have for them, are vast.
I don't think age has anything to do with it. At 67 we use phones and pads for most of the things you have highlighted. Plus quite a lot of others, such as face time, books, magazines and newspapers. Don't do tele much, although have watched the odd Grand Prix on Sky. Both our iPhones are fairly old and paid for, so on Sim only contracts at a combined cost of £25.
Judging by some of the folk we regularly meet, when out for our walks in the forest around here. It is some of the young folk who are behind in the times / haven't a clue. If I had a £1 for every time I have been asked for the way back to the car park or visitors centre by those in there 20's / 30's I would be rich.😀 I suppose they might have been some of the few without a smart phone, but unlikely in all cases.

Likewise, I don’t think it’s age but mindset and interest.
I also don’t think there’s an age gap of a whole generation between W&M and the majority of posters here.

The CC say they have tried content blocking to prevent downloading of large files. Wouldn't others do similar? Not that I think the majority of coffee shops WiFi would be up to it. Given the speed, or lack of it, downloading a film could well cost more in coffee than buying the DVD.😂

I will occasionally use site wifi to watch the odd youtube. We don't normally want TV when away although occasionally have watched a few hours over Christmas. This Christmas we did not bother as the only thing that Fliss wanted to watch was a University Challenge Celebrity Christmas edition which she did watch on her tablet using wifi.
I would be unlikely to do similar regarding searching out a coffee shop etc- I don't even walk to a hotspot on sites (including the odd CC site) that only provide that service. Generally if wifi is not available where I want it I will use our 24gb 12 month prepaid 4g data sim.

I can only recollect two CC sites that I have used which had only a hot spot. I will look for the list out of interest Brue.
The old Railway site at Herefords was hot spot and no phone coverage but did not use the hot spot. Blaidon Chains was hotspot only but I was able to use from our caravan and did watch a few 10/15 min Youtubes that I follow during our 5 night stay

Ah yes found the link. Many of those sites which have a hot spot I have used but for my usage it means that there is no wifi

I don't think it is a generation gap, as in not wanting to or not knowing how to use the technology, but I can see there could be an income gap.
Once retired, unless you go back to work your income is fixed, and does not always keep up with inflation, there is no overtime or bonus payments to use to boost or replenish savings.
And of course not all workers are well paid either.
There will be workers and pensioners with plenty of money to buy the new cars/caravans/toys, those who have to watch every penny, and those in between who budget for what they want/need so that they can enjoy their hobbies for as long as possible.
Personally, while I would like to have the latest technology, I do not really need it, so I cannot justify the large expenditure. Instead, I expect to be putting it towards a new boiler in the near future!

Whether your own provider is a better option or not depends on individual circumstance.
I doubt that we use more than £30 a years on our mobiles (ASDA using EE network). I suspect that only about £2 or £3 of that is used during the 8 months of the year when we are not away in the caravan. We only need data or site wifi for about 120/130 nights a year spread over 6 months plus December.
Last year we paid £50 for our 24gb data sim and £25 for a CC access. We paid £4 on a commercial site for 5 nights as we had not bought our 24gb sim at the start of that holiday but did have a 2gb and a 4gb available and both free to us. One came with a mobile router and one from a friend. We expected another 15 nights where we would not have CC wifi.
Our mobile internet access for the year was therefore £80 and with phone about £120. Last year our breaks away were, 5 weeks, 7 weeks, 5 weeks and 2 weeks and would not have sat well with a 12 month contract and especially as I have no intention of carrying a large phone that won't fit comfortably in the front pocket of a pair of jeans when out and about. We do carry our mifi and a tablet in the car when out from the caravan as having visited somewhere it has been useful for deciding the next port of call or something of interest in the area.
My internet usage on holiday is far greater than OH's and hence the one CC account. A big difference is that she reads books (albeit mainly on kindle these days). Since I lost the site in my right eye over 5 years ago I no longer find reading books comfortable at the distance at which I like to hold a book due to lack of field and the need to move my single sighted eye from side to side unlike when I had two that worked. Personal circumstance again.
