There is a cottage near us which is being partly re-thatched. The local Rooks are having a field day gathering up the spare straw, I'm wondering what makes a stronger nest, twigs or straw, especially in high winds?!

Brue,  Corvids  are  pretty  good  builders,  so  they  probably  interleave  the  twigs  for  stability  then  pad  the  nests  with  the  Straw.  The  one  thing  I'm  not  sure  of  is  which  sex  does  the  building,  and  which  is  just  the  'collector'  surprised

When  the  ospreys  return  in  April  or  so,  the  first  to  pick  a  nest  site  starts  ( re )building,  then  when  happily  paired  the  smaller  male  collects  the  material  &  the  female  does  the  construction.  Well  she  will  do  the  laying  &  most  of  the  sitting  wink.

( Bit  of  a  cheat  I  know,  'cos  the  cameras  at  Loch  Garten  & other  nest  sites  will  be  aimed  at  the  nests  &  much  fun  is  to  be  had  watching  Birdy Builders innocent )

We've had Tawny Owls calling, close by, from 6:30pm last night, on and off throughout the night and again tonight. This morning there was a Yellowhammer and Skylarks singing as I took Flyte for his first walk. Then while walking through Allerthorne Common Woods this afternoon we spotted a couple of Brimstone Butterflies.

I was surprised today when I saw a Red Kite gliding over the Pocklington Canal. I hadn't realised that they'd spread as far as the Wolds.

Good day out at Leighton Moss RSPB reserve.

Highlights, apart from the weather, being a female Merlin that provided plenty of entertainment, a Noctule Bat flying around at 2 o'clock on a February afternoon and some Scarlet elf-cup mushrooms. The day was a delight.

Walking on the Wolds today there were flocks of Yellowhammers and Corn Buntings, a couple of Red Kites flew over, and among the numerous Pheasants walking about there was an all white one. Not sure if it was a true Albino, or one with Leucism, as it was too far away to tell.

Spring has arrived had two lizards about 1 metre from my chair deciding it was time wow not seen that before and very close, also had 20 red kites flying over going north east and the other day had an unusual magpie in the field very off white and a light chocolate colour not seen that before.

Good to see the hobby OP a bit early for dragonflies.

Very warm here today 26C phew, but at least many bees are enjoying my Lonicera Fragrantissima in full flower and lovely perfume.

Just been sorting through a few photos of our break in the Peak District. We saw these birds along the River Wye, on our walk. I think they are Dippers, but its the first time I have seen them. Hoping someone in the know will advise if they are. Thanks.smile

Good spot H&T definitely a dipper.  I’ve only seen them on the upper reaches of the Wye.  What part of the Wye did you spot them.

Thank you for the confirmation Oneputt. smile

We were following the river from the end of Monsal trail near Buxton, we had crossed over the bridge by the weir near the car park and  then following the river back to the trail via the Pennine Bridleway. We also saw a couple along the river from Litton Mill to Millers Dale. They seem to be doing well along that stretch of the river. We enjoyed watching them.

We had a good day out at Gibraltar Point. From The Mere hide we saw 3 Snipe then walking round a Marsh Harrier few overhead. On the shore were lots of Brent Geese, seals and a flight of Whooped Swans. On the Tennyson's Pools were Pintails, Shovellers, Teal, Widgeon and in flew 3 Avocets. However the real gems were 7 Crossbills, 4 makes and 3 females on the trees around the Beach Carpark.

What 'makes' were the crossbills?? Did you mean Whooper swans. wink

Went down to Parkgate on Wirral this late morning. A mile walk there and the sane back with my stick is fine wink

We saw a flock of what is one of my favourite birds .... Lapwings. A meal out to follow

Damn predictive spelling on the Kindle!! Sorry, ET, you're right of course. We're you mad on the outward leg of the walk then?wink

I forgot to mention that I spotted a small deer, which I think was  Chinese Water Deer, but it didn't hang around long enough to get a proper look at it. Today we saw a Muntjac in the scrub behind the sand dunes near Anderby Creek.

Well I can't blame predictive text! Is that your excuse for 'we're' instead of were? wink
