Warning - check your CAMC insurance

Being a newbie to the world of Motorhomes and wanting to support the CAMC I decided that CAMC Insurance would be the place to go....

To be honest It was easy to take out the Policy...But then it went sadly wrong.. There were numerous errors in the Policy documentation which could have cost me thousands where they only valued my Motorhome as £4000 rather than £40,000 as well as wrong dates.

Then they claimed my Motorhome was a panel van - I was told I had to call DVLA which I did and it was correctly listed as a Motor Caravan, I spoke to the dealer I was buying it from and they checked the V5C. I called CAMC insurance and they checked it again and sure enough it then showed correctly as a Motor Caravan...but still they want a copy of the V5C, no we have made a mistake - very much my problem.

Sadly very little apology and they still will not believe it was their mistake... I guess they don't make mistakes - or in my case overlook the numerous ones.

Just wanted to make people aware that Check, Check and Double Check your documents if they come from CAMC insurance.

I can only hope that things will get better as its taken the excitement off of my purchase and work of Motorhome ownership.

It won't be an issue for us. We are switching to a MH in a few weeks. When I got a quote from the CC, which took a couple of days as it was refused online, the figure was close to £1200, with a very large excess. We will be going with another firm providing comparable cover plus European breakdown / recovery for less than half the price.

It does not  seem so ET. Even then they said there was only one underwriter that would consider me. The rest refused. Although we have had no issues getting reasonable insurance figures on our cars and caravan, from various suppliers. That figure required an alarm and tracker, which we will have.

Have you tried NFU, Steve? They insured our MH with no problems and no security devices required for a fraction of the price you were quoted. There’s no breakdown cover though, neither UK nor overseas.

Thanks TW. I may give them a go, although considering it includes European breakdown / recovery the quote I have from Comfort looks fairly good.

I don't know if the NFU treat motorhomes differently with it being a motor vehicle in its own right but when I tried to insure our caravan with them, they could only do so if you had house insurance with them.  It's treated as an 'add on' to the house insurance, apparently.

Their quote for house insurance was extortionate compared to our present insurers (LV) so they didn't get the business, despite the fact they insure both our cars.

The 4,000 instead of 40,00 was clearly an inputting error and would not have prevented a claim as the premium was based on the higher figure, although I cannot see why the dates would be wrong. It does show that you should check these things carefully with any insurer as  details can be wrong.

The problems with the description seems odd and was to have been handled badly though, and an apology does seem to be due.

I have just placed my caravan insurance for next year with "The Friendly Club" because of the strangely much lower premium.

Caravan 5c's insurance is very different from Motorhome insurance....Car and Motorhome insurance is obtained from the wider Insurance market by the CMC broker.  5 c's i think is still 'in house' with the Club ?   They 'Should' be a cheap quote...it is  a Club after all, isnt it ?

Not very good is it Devitts ?  must try harder.

I would have preferred this clubs insurance to the C&CC but the 100 pounds difference was just too much.

We gave up with MH insurance via this Club years ago. Apart from the fact that C&CC usually comes up with a cheaper comparable quote anyway, the hoops we were told we had to jump through in taking out a price match policy were just too convoluted, so we threw in the towel and went elsewhere. Email attachments or photocopies of proof of no claims for all our other vehicles were no good. They wanted the originals or it was game over. So like one or two others who have experienced similar problems, we walked away. This is where the newly launched Trustpilot reviews come in handy. You suddenly realise you are not the only one who walked this particular path.

I am afraid that original documents are being demanded more and more as e mails and photocopies are subject to a lot of fraud.

Recent renewal quotes for both our cars have been twice the price of Saga and LV. Needless to say neither are now insured with the Club.

Just changing back to a caravan after two motorhomes and it looks like the caravan insurance  will also be heading for either Saga or the Friendly Club.

As the last renewal notice arrived on the first of April I did ask if it was an April Fool Prank or had they really lost their way!!
