Austrian Toll Roads for over 3.5T MH's
Has anyone out there used the Go-box system for high (>3m ) and/or heavy (>3.5t) motor-homes?
Advantages/disadvantages?

Comments from actual GoBox users crop up more frequently on the specialist Motorhome forums than on here ( Google will point them out). A point to note as you read them is the very considerable mileage charge which clocks up on Austrian motorways with a GoBox.

We were in Austria in August (2018) with a >3.5 motorhome. At that stage it was compulsory to have a Go-Box if > 3.5 tonnes ... I doubt its changed? The process of getting one is pretty simple ... there will be a service station just inside the Austrian border advertising the box ... you pay a deposit for the box, which you get back when you return it, plus a top-up depending on how many miles you plan to do ... you can top up the box on the internet if you travel further than you'd planned. The box will beep as you pass under sensors on the roads ... from memory its beeps twice when your balance is getting low. Don't take this risk of running out of credit ... when you leave Austria they will mak ethey pay the balance, but also fine you heavily. You get any credit paid back when you leave. Simple system, from memory not expensive, more set up for trucks than motorhomes. I suspect the admin costs for motorhomes are more than the revenue. Note also that a few other countries also require Go-Box ... Chechia, Poland and in theory Hungary. Its the same design, but a differnt box you need to get for each country. At the Hungary border the official refused to accept that we were > 3.5 so sold us a much cheaper vignette ... go figure!

Thanks for your help and the links, I'm undecided where to pay up or try to go non motorway we're in no hurry so the latter may by the choice. First trip is only through Austria via Innsbruck to Italy.

Hi Ian, In 2015 we travelled to Italy via Austria and our friends were in their 4.2 tonne Autotrail MH and did not want to use the GoBox system following comments from other MH friends.
We asked questions re this on CT and the suggestions were to use the route over the Fern pass into Austria and then the Reina/Reshen pass into Italy.
Research though showed that the Landecker tunnel is part of the motorway system so to avoid that you need to go via Landecker town itself, which we did.
This is then a totally toll free route. I beleive it is possible to get to Innsbruck on toll free roads but you would need to check that.
